FSU people and US ID
« on: July 17, 2010, 08:37:07 AM »
Isn't the passport the main ID used in the FSU?
For some reason my wife has never memorized her SSN.
I have tried telling her that the SSN is the ID that is used most often in the US by banks, immigration and IRS. I am wondering if other FSU ladies have neglected to memorize their SSN.

Oddly, my wife and I had a talk about this about a year ago after she commented about how I just rattle mine off all the time when on the phone, at the bank, etc. She understands that she needs to memorize it like she does her cell number.

I suspect that their passports were/are much more dependent on the paper, picture and information contained thereon whereas ours are more focused on the number as an index for checking up electronically. Much more of their activity is done face-to-face rather than over the phone or via Internet. For example, I don't meorize my DL number or insurance card number since it is used almost always in f-t-f mode.

It was no big dealjust something that came up as an environmental difference.

I think men in general memorize more numbers than women, at least this is what I have experienced. No big deal really.

I told my wife she had to memorize her number and should never carry her card in her purse fo safety and secutity reasons. So now every time we need her number she just goes into her purse and pulls it out where it is written on a piece of scratch paper.   ::)

Is the SSN a 'talking code', at least partly? What we have here is our Codice Fiscale (Tax Code), which is and this makes it easier to memorise - mine is:
FLRFNC43B02L746T

The first 6 letters are the consonants from my name (FLoRiani FraNCo), followed by my birthdate date (year, 1943, month B i.e. February, day 02) and location code (L746), plus a final control character (T) obtained from the preceding 15 characters.

The SSN is all numbers in the following pattern, XXX-XX-XXXX. There used to be a geographic coding but I am not sure that is still in effect due to reissuing of numbers which began a decade or so ago.

Tougher to memorise, then. Although I can still remember the phone no. of the IBM UK Croydon location where I worked for some 8 months back in 1971 - almost 40 years ago:
686-0621

No apparent reason for that, since I worked but almost never called there ::). Memory is a strange thing: I recall that NOT as a series of numbers but of words (six-eight-six, oh-six-two-one) - possibly due to a certain 2/4 rhythm in it :D.

Sandro, this is a big 'no, no' in USA.  That is to divulge such to a wide audience.

Reason being is that such numbers are an integral part of a person's financial data history, and obtaining such puts the scammers well on their way to stealing your identity and ruining your credit rating.

Isn't that a worry in your Italian case?
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.

Not really, our Codice Fiscale alone cannot be used for any significant transaction, our identity is checked against some official document (ID card, driving license, passport, etc.) that includes a photo ;).

As the name implies, it is used mostly for tax-related purposes (tax returns, invoices, bills, etc.).

Nata has a hard time memorizing numbers----something I find very strange; since she worked as CFO in Odessa.
She says that's why she keeps me---to remember her SSN for her
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.
