I think there are people that are much more expert at this than I am.  I will tell you the country code for the usa and then you can say, oh, shoot, I shoulda known that.

The country code for the usa is    "1"   you dial 1-ac+no

Someone may have better ideas but you can call the usa through AT&T by calling 8-100-11 in ukraine and following directions.  You can also by cards there that will let you call.   I don't call back much so some others might be better at the infol.

There are always very big problems, at least the first time, in calling anywhere from anywhere.  The problems relate to the various digits that must be punched BEFORE you even think about punching in the country code.

And these first digits will/may change depending on what method you are using to call from.  i.e.  The beginning digits will be different for dialing from a home phone, a pay phone, a mobile phone, using a calling card, etc.

Best to try to find someone who has actually performed the specific type and method of calling you will be doing (and hope they remember how they did it), and reading as much instructions as you can find on the internet, etc.

This phone thing is always one of my worst nightmares for each new city I visit.

Len,

Generally, press/dial 8 (for intercity services) and wait for the  second dial tone. Then press/dial 10 (for international service) and 1  (the U.S. country code,) followed by the phone number you wish to  call...so: 8-10-1-212-555-1212...

Two posters just proved my point.

One says 8-100-11 and one says 8-10-1

And both could be right . . . just depends what type of instrument and service you are using to start your call.

Further, things are always changing.  Russia is just now instituting some major changes.  Currently 0 is used to start some calls to police, etc.  But these calls are being changed to 112.  This is to free up the prefix 0 for use on long distance and international calls, a change that could come into effect as early as next year.
Long distance calls, which currently use the prefix 8, would then switch to 0, while international calls would use the prefix 00, instead of 810.  And many city area codes are being changed in Russia also

For land lines, there is no choice: Ukrtelecom has a monopoly. Thus,  8-10-1 is the only prefix that works. For mobile (cell) phones, well, I  am only familiar with Kyivstar and their prefix is the same. Note that  there are *many* mobile providers...now, how about a Ukrainian cable  company providing telephony just like, say, Cablevision in New York?

Incidentally, I did try 8-100-1 and it did not work on my home phone. Got a recording in Russian asking I check the number, etc.

My 8-100 suggestion was read off a card published by AT&T with instructions how to call from anywhere using AT&T.    I have never tried it but I have faith that a company like AT&T would get it right.   That is supposed to connect you to AT&T system and then to the usa.   Maybe if I get a chance next week I will try it just to see if it works.  Only problem is I probably don't have anyone to call back in the good olde USA.

Thanks R,

Do you happen to know of a good calling card to use from Kiev area to the US? I need one so my friends can phone me since it is expensive to call direct. Len

Len,

To call the U.S. from Kiev? I once tried a card called "Allo," but it  was no bargain at all. Kyivstar's rates are 1.5 griven a minute  (roughly 30 cents,) so in comparison with card rates available in the  U.S., it still expensive to call the U.S. Ukrtelecom charges 46  cents/minute off-peak (after 6 p.m weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.)

Why is that? We invented the telephone, UK should be code 1! How come we got a lowly 44? Mind you, the invention of the telephone was rather pointless until somebody invented the second one....

Staten Island, NY -- While history text books laud Alexander Graham Bell for inventing the telephone, it was actually a little-known Italian immigrant from Milan who developed the prototype years before.

Antonio Meucci never received the recognition he deserved during his lifetime, but this evening - 113 years after his death - the House of Representatives is expected to pass a Resolution honoring his contributions and recognizing him as the true inventor of the telephone. ....

So, the country where live BC ( Italy ) could have the code 1 :P:D:D[/align]
