Back from family visit
« on: December 24, 2010, 05:10:34 AM »
Back from our trip to Ukraine to see her mom and family. Had a pretty good time. 1st night the food and vodka were good,,then the moonshine vodka came out. Next day my hand had a big gash,my left ankle was swolen,my pants were torn and my forehead had an abraision! Wife told me I wanted to walk,,she tried to hold me up but it seems I fell a few times. The rest of our time I just sipped the drinks.Got to see some WW2 stuff, some fellow firemen and even though it was very cool the women are still hot and wearing short skirts and boots!

Would you ever dream of going to China and then reporting about your visit to Peiping or Peking?

It is Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine.

Yes, it was once spelled Dnepropetrovsk, just as the Chinese capital was once spelled (by outsiders) as Peiping and Peking.

The country and cities belong  to Ukraine.  Why not use their official spelling?

Oh, I dunno--maybe because it is in the Russian area of Ukraine and most of its residents use the Russian spelling?

The oblast is 80% ethnic Ukrainian.  That is despite Soviet policies of Russification of all of Ukraine for over half a century.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

The percentage is correct, but according to my brother-in-law who lives there the most common language on the street is still Russian.

The most common language on the street is Russian only because of deliberate policies of Russification.  That is why policies encouraging Ukrainian language use, and use of Ukrainian place names, were developed.  It is a slow process.

Twenty years ago, if you stopped and asked for directions in Ukrainian in Kyiv, you'd be laughed at.  That is not the case now.

Dnepropetrovsk,Ukraine!

You've got it right Thompsongunner... and thanks for trying to post some info and interesting photos from your trip before the thread was completely mutilated by a few trolls!

 :cluebat:

Get a clue...  no one really gives a sh!t about the spelling of Dnepropetrovsk unless you're in Dnepropetrovsk and a local takes a dislike to you spelling it Dnipropetrovsk.

ManLooking... are you still looking or have you married a woman from Dnepropetrovsk... and is she one of the very small minority Ukrainian speakers in a city totally entrenched in Russian language?

My wife is from there... and I promise you she would think you were a fool for spelling it any other way.

Oh, I dunno--maybe because it is in the Russian area of Ukraine and most of its residents use the Russian spelling?
EXACTLY!

I just don't see the point in these people constantly raising this moronic argument about the spelling of place names.  When are we going to start seeing people arguing about who in the west is really speaking Polish...   and at what point of the borders being drawn do you then force majority Ethnic Russian populations to stop speaking the only language they've ever spoken at home?

It reminds me of the Climate Change Debate when we have these fraudsters telling us "The Science is Settled"... It's NOT %$#@ing settled, it's just trying to be forced down people's throats.

I think Ukraine has far bigger problems than the spelling of place names to deal with... and I for one couldn't give a sh!t who spells it what way because it has ZERO IMPACT on the original thread.

The oblast is 80% ethnic Ukrainian.  That is despite Soviet policies of Russification of all of Ukraine for over half a century.
This has nothing to do with the thread and as a Mod I would have thought you'd be clued up enough not to contribute to the constant pollution of threads like this...  You, and people like you, have weakened RWD greatly - just check out the terribly low volume of posts per member compared with two or three years ago.

So,  happy you got your point across? Do you think it added a lot of value to the thread?

The percentage is correct, but according to my brother-in-law who lives there the most common language on the street is still Russian.

*YAWN*... do you ever get tired of pushing the same old barrow?

Boethius at the very least should know if she feels like debating irrelevant points she should start another thread and go for her life over there...

I for one would like to have had a nice thread sharing photos and stories of Dnepropetrovsk... but why bother when there are people here,  even MODS, who don't respect a members innocent initial posts on his own topic???

No wonder this place like it is now!

Sheeesh...  I've had enough again.  It's a waste of time in here!

Brow beat everyone you like over the spelling of place names but you're going to end up with ZERO content worth anything!

Thompsongunner,

Thanks for sharing.  Sounds as if you were well accepted by her family, and that is important.  I don't know why the men of a family derive so much amusement from overserving their foreign guests.   You survived.

What is the weapon in the photo (not a Tommy gun of course, but antitank)?  A sergeant in my unit in Vietnam had a Tommy.  It was reallllllllllly heavy with the .45 ammo and a drum clip.  We had fun firing it on the beach (at beer can targets).

Regarding spelling of the city, it matters little (especially since you are using English rather than Cyrillic letters).  Be proud if you were able to pronounce correctly either form, especially after a couple of vodka toasts.    Somewhat confusing topic because the city obviously derives its name from the river which is spelled frequently as "Dnieper."

Heck, at first I thought you were talking about Dneprodzerzhinsk, less than an hour north.

Tourist:  Do you say Hawaii or Havaii?
Local:  Havaii.
Tourist:  Thank you.
Local:  You're velcome. :D :D :D

Thanks Gator,,,yes it is a WW2 Anti Tank Rifle,,,looks like 20mm or so. A US 50 cal round is about half the size. This guy finds stuff all the time. You are correct the town/city is near the river.  Overall I and the wife had a great time.
