Simple folks, especially when they are poor and normally survive on meager vegetable diet, will not forgo the chance to have a soup with proteins, even if the proteins come from an old and very noble animal. Likely, they will not eat a dog, cat, or rat. But horse? Why not?

True, and my mother would cook and serve squirrels that I had shot as a kid.  And a squirrel is nothing more than a rat with a pretty tail and entertaining antics.

However, having ridden horses I feel connected to them even though they are not very intelligent animals.  The French eat horse, hence my comment in French.  And BC has it readily available in his city.   Some rednecks in my state eat gator, God forbid!

Comparing across countries; there are several instances where meat from certain animals is eaten in some countries and not in other countries.

And even within a country, there can be substantial differences.

We are all captive to our culture and individual upbringing.

I would easily agree about pigs and cows. But I am not aware of any country which would specifically forbid eating horses, in let's say 19th century.

Hi Mies:

I wasn't thinking 'forbid' in terms of laws or religion.  Rather, just relating cultural and generally observed habits.

Horse meat has never been part of the regular diet in USA and I would say the idea is repugnant to 'most' Americans, right up there with dog meat, etc.  However, I realize in some European countries, it is a fairly standard item.

Forgive me for intruding. I think that biblical book of Leviticus (Chapter 11) pretty much dictates western diet. There, in Asia or among Native Americans whose life was not so much affected by the Bible, they include insects and reptiles.

One hundred years ago, eating lobster, crab or shrimp was a totally unacceptable.  Lobster was the food of the very poor.

I offered to send something to a lady with whom I am corresponding, and she said, "Thanks, but your visit in June will be the best gift you can give me."

Wow this would would set off warning alarms in my head! If it was me I would make sure I still sent her something, even if it was small. From my experience, I would say that, no matter what she says, she will be very disappointed if she does not get something! I could be wrong.............

I agree with you. I'm sending something. I did not have her address prior to today. We're still early in our correspondence and getting to know each other better, so I had to tread lightly, so to speak.

Well, things didnt go as planned.  I used 1800flowers to send the orchids, but due to confusion with her work address, and phone numbers, it was a huge pain.   I had scheduled the delivery for Monday because she was leaving on Tuesday night for the holiday.  When I found out the order had not shipped I was upset, particularly since I made the order 2 weeks early. Luckily, Flowers2Moscow/RussianFlora was able to come to my rescue.  Despite it being the start of a busy holiday, I placed an order with them on Monday and it was delivered the next day.  This was despite a glitch in the website, which confirmed I had placed an order with them, but for some reason it did not tell them what I had ordered.  The best part is I received 5 emails and 3 phone calls from them during that time making sure my order was correct.  I still havent received a single email from 1800....Im not saying I wouldnt use 1800 again, I just probably will not use them overseas.  Anyway, I sent a red rose and white lily bouquet (http://http://www.flowers2moscow.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?pid=3166)instead and she absolutely loved it.  I was a little worried about sending lilies since her name is Lily (Oh, your name is Lily so I thought I would send you Lilies  :cluebat: ), but it didnt matter.  I think she liked the light green color of the bouquet best anyway.  So I guess from here on Flowers2Moscow will be getting my business, and I would recommend them as well.

Thanks Guys (and Gals especially), for your input.

Happy Early International Womens Day
