J-1 Visa Abuses
« on: December 06, 2010, 09:04:39 AM »
Here is a rather sad but interesting story relating to the abuses in the J-1 visa process.

Interesting story Turbo!

Somebody has really dropped the ball, it is really appalling that this can happen in the USA.
This kind of thing doesn't get enough press IMO.

Thanks for posting it!

That said, the program does do well for the vast majority of the student participants. My son went over in 2006 and had a great time, made a lot of money and enjoyed being in Reno, NV for 4 months. He shared a typical hotel room with 3 guys and described it as being a lot like my old fraternity days so no real wear and tear on them. This was their decision to go 4 to a room and cut costs in order to save more money.

I'd love to hire 2-3 of these kids for next summer if dealing with the companies and embassy wasn't such a hassle. As it is I am expecting the son of one friend to be here next summer working at regular wages, with insurance coverage and earning SS credit. His wife may come over to work for a few months as well.

It is also clear from the article that Ukrainians and Russians are doing this to their own people as well. Threats, coercion, rape and setting up deals with US criminals enables this activity.

Obviously, anyone who is abusing these kids or putting them into effective slavery, sexual or labor-wise, should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Pick and choose carefully among the advice offered and consider the source carefully. PM, Skype or email if you care to chat or discuss

Seems we both saw the same story, although on two different sites. We have two threads running on the same subject. Can a mod but the two of them together to avoid duplication of posts?
Tom Hanks in Castaway: You never know what the tide may bring in.
Viking: But you still need to walk along the beach to find it.
