Is legally adopted daughter automatically a citizen?
« on: December 09, 2010, 04:22:08 PM »
Well... its taken awhile, but I am now my Russian daughters legal father.  My lawyer even indicated she might be issued a state birth certificate!

I'm wondering if her immigration status will change from Permanent Resident to citizen?  She is 15.

Kevin, congratulations, Papa !!

Good News - it looks automatic. <------ Strike that. What happened was I'm groggy from an afternoon nap.

Kevin, I am sure it is different for each state. My situation was a bit different but, I was able to get a birth certificate that looks just like any other child that was born in my state. The only difference is where it says city of birth, it says "Russia". I just had to make a few calls to the state capital. After the initial run around, it was a relative easy process and well worth the trouble. Congratulations. Doc Rep

Congratulations.  I cant say about your state, but here in Texas when you adopt a foreign person, you get a form to send to the state to get a new birth certificate, I did that with my stepdaughter.  Yes the child is automatically a U.S. citizen when adopted by a U.S. citizen.  After you get the new birth certificate you can then apply for a U.S. passport for the adopted child.

Again, congratulations.
