The topic of not being able to find Russian food items in the US was being discussed on the RWG.

For you married guys who live in a location where it's hard to find a taste of home for you lady, look online.

I have a few sites in my bookmarks which I like to share. There are probably others.

I hope this helps someone out there.

Jooky, have you personally used all three, any particular recommendations?

Usually we have been disappointed in that most of the offerings are best described as fitting the Kosher or Eastern European categories and weren't too authentic, but always looking for good ones.

I haven't used the sites yet, but I've seen some familiar brands on all three. I was actually ordering Russian books online when I bookmarked those food sites.

What I meant in my post above is that many of the offerings are actually made in NYC and often don't taste anything like what you buy in the FSU.

We can't get good Russian bread (that dark stuff with the dense texture) in my parts although we have tried all the local "Russian" stores.  I wouldn't mind overnite expressing some in now and then just to satisfy our tastebuds!

You have to go to Brighton if you want excellent Russian bread.  The place I like best is called "bread" (Xleb) in Russian and is located on Brighton 1, third shop in from the corner off Brighton Beach Avenue.  It is one block removed from Ocean Parkway, which actually separates Brighton from Coney Island.

Tell me!  For nearly two years we've been looking for a decent substitute.  Best we have come up with is a decent Parisian white baked in a local supermarket, and an interesting seeded light pumpernickel rye from Canada.

Decent Russian bread demands a long time process ( about two days) so it's not too "economical"  That's why it's hard to find decent bread at the West :P
Here it's produced only at big factories but not in small private bakeries which prefer to make "fast" bread

Elen, not everyone in America shops at Walmart, buying cheap quality and quickly made items.  In the region I live, there have been a number of small(er) bakeries specializing in fine quality "designer" breads.

It is more an issue of supply and demand.  The majority of varieties these bakeries offer are wheat/multi-grain breads (for the nutritionally fitness aware) and varieties common in the Mediterranean (as food from this region is currently popular).  So no good black Russian bread for us.

So not everyone in America is eating soft, mushy white bread...

I didn't say that fast made bread - here it's right that which made by western technologies - was cheap quality It's just another kind and here such bread costs twice or more in comparisoion with fine russian "cheap" traditional bread

One of the things we miss most from Michigan are the bakeries.  In the Detroit area there were plenty of great Jewish and Polish bakeries with high quality baked goods.  Not so great here in San Diego.  We always stock up when we travel up to L.A. where there is at least one good Russian bakery.  Unfortunately, California's idea of good bread is sourdough!  Yuk!

When it comes to bread the Germans have the absolute best... except for French 'flit'.

Look for German bakeries in your area.. my wife loves them.

I'm gonna go the other direction here-how about not finding Canadian food items in Russia.:P

I'd like a big assed plate of Buffalo Hotwings & a couple of cold Kokehenee's & the Blue Jays playing at the Skydome & I'd be a right happy camper!!!!

Ken,

Do you have contact information (name, location, whatever) for that bakery (or other sites) in the L.A. area? Now that we have more time to seek these items out, I am sure my wife would love to find some.

Yeah, I was going to ask KenC the same thing. We've shopped most of the stores/restaurants in Santa Monica Blvd/ West Hollywood area and my wife refuses to bring back the merchandise saying it's too old/dirty/Jewish, etc. etc.

After a couple of trips, we no longer visit the place, although it appears that NYC is where you need to go if you want the 'good stuff.'

I have to say I was never impressed by russian bread or cheese. Bland and boring in both cases. I am talking about bread purchased in russian stores in russia where ordinary people shop. In Ukraine it was the same, although I did find swiss cheese among the dozens of bland cheeses, and some decent french/italian style breads.

But I love "russian rye" from orrowheat, and pumpernickle(sp). I have to agree that german bakeries are the best.

Elen, maybe you need to get out more, I can find better bread at a US Gas station than I found at the gorcery store in Petropavlovsk.
