Russian Federation President Medvedev submitted to the State Duma for ratification the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the United States of America on Transit of Weapons, Military Equipment, Military Assets and Personnel via Russian Federation Territory in Connection with Participation by Armed Forces of the United States of America in Efforts to Maintain Security, Stabilise and Rehabilitate the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
Such an agreement, operating within the framework of U.N. Security Council resolutions, would allow countries such as the USA opportunity for transit over Russian air space of U.S. armaments, military hardware, munitions and personnel, which are going to be used in operations, conducted by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), as well as of armaments, military hardware, munitions and personnel of other countries, to which the U.S. gives rear support in Afghanistan. Under the agreement, U.S. military-transport planes and other state-owned transport planes making transit flights in accordance with the agreement are exempted from air navigation fees and granted permission to fly over Russian air space.
