I don't know the joke, yet it sounds as if a headache in the morning is to avoid going to work.  A real man works and takes care of his family.

Two problems with your interpretation.

First, sex is a great way to get rid of a headache.

Second, the next part of original said: 'If our men were similar to our women, they would be real men.'

So in your interpretation; the men would be 'real men' if they claimed headache to avoid sex?  Doesn't make a lot of sense.

These two concerns of mine is why I didn't think I understood the joke.

Sorry I guess I missed the second part. Would be nice to read the joke in Russian variation but I could not find. So probably a meaning is "if men would work and take care of everything like women do instead of drinking they would be real men and would have a headache in the evening instead of morning"

A headache in the morning may be a hangover for the man. If he didn't drink so much he would be a real man and ready for action in the morning when the woman was ready at the same time.  Of course when she steps out of the bath or shower with a towel around her and walks to the bed dropping the towel, that should be good enough to cure a hangover. That's my take on it.
