Yes, milk...

Both my wife and I are lactose intolerant.  :(

One processed milk that comes to mind is evaporated milk. They're readily available anywhere. Here, Russia and globally. I love that stuff because you can almost store it in room temperature for infinity as they're usually canned. Then there's 'condensed' milk, which you can make a nice sweetened gel-like dessert with. Yum, except Montezuma's revengeful wrath almost always come a-knockin' on our door...

Maple syrup is a splendid gift to take to the FSUW.

Just mix condensed milk with egg yolks and lime juice, pour into a graham cracker crust, and bake - Key Lime pie.  Never had the trots.

In America,  they would drink little milk saying it had a bad taste.  However, they said the American organic milk was really good.

I even did blind taste tests of organic milk vs. conventional milk from three different food chains.  They selected the organic sample 3 times in three tests.

I have an idea why that is so. Unlike here in Europe, and perhaps also Russia, US farmers feed their cows antibiotics and shoot them up with growth hormone. Certified organic milk do not practise this and it obviously affect the end product, the milk, both nutritionally and the taste. Unfortunately the authorities in the US are waging a war against producers of raw milk. Raw milk is the real milk and many people who think they are allergic to milk (factory milk), have no problems with raw milk. I know of several examples right here.

We can get her the Keifer easily near me. But she sure misses the Russian bread. I like it also. There are  Russian and Polish stores in Chicago but none close by.
She usually brings home some cheaper perscription medicines [ much cheaper there ] and other stuff she claims is "good for her health". And the last trip we bought clothes for the two of us. Interesting styles and cheaper than here.

I like Publix fresh baked bread but what I miss is the fresh bread crust... real crust.

In my childhood I also liked fresh milk right after milking still warm with peppermint cakes.

Here is an interesting study on law fat milk

http://wss.nourishingconnections.org/Education/LOW%20fat%20milk%20causes%20weight%20gain.pdf

Very interesting find Olga. Thanks.

That explains why milk in the US doesn't seem to taste quite right.

And the last trip we bought clothes for the two of us. Interesting styles and cheaper than here.

Interesting how perspectives differ. I find Russia and Estonia *very* expensive for clothes that are any good. And in Russia, everything nestles under a sodium light at four times the price it should be; and when you ask for it in your size, it is always "finished". In contrast, the US is VERY cheap for decent clothes for me I find. I, like most Brits, fly to the US with empty suitcases and return with overweight baggage. The US is dire for womens styles though my wife thinks; she thinks it is all shapeless, drab stuff that is not feminine there. And don't get her started on the cuts of the jeans being all wrong.......

Certainly different than any experiences I have had or heard about.

'Things' are usually cheaper in USA than in FSU, while 'people services' are usually cheaper in FSU than in USA.

The gal with me has been amazed at the great bargains she can find on clothes here in USA and is trying to figure out how she can purchase tons of them and send to Ukraine.  I told her after she pays shipping and bribes, they won't be such bargains.

Here she has found great clothes on sale for something like a dime on a dollar.  She says there are NEVER such sales in FSU.

Just last weekend, she bought a very sexy looking 'little black dress' (very short, form fitting and sleeveless) for $29.99 at a high end department store.  It was price tagged at $159.99, with sale price of $79.99 and 'one day only' price of $29.99.

Grechka (buckwheat) and curtains
 ;)

Buckwheat sold in a wholefood stores :)

Things to buy in USA to bring back to Ukraine: clothes and shoes. Some cosmetics too but the cosmetics prices are relatively same in Ukraine/Russia as in USA.

Items to buy in Ukraine/Russia: teas, herbal teas, paintings/art, hand-made local souvenirs.

A true Kiwi or Aussie will never leave home without a jar of Vegemite.

Funnily enough I could never get my wife to sample something that to her, looked and (probably) smelled like axle grease!!

Aussies maybe, but Kiwis I prefer Marmite!  My friend tried Vegemite when she was here last month - one tentative bite on the toast and it was as if I had tried to poison her!  There's just no accounting for taste...
