Lukashenko and Belarus
« on: March 21, 2012, 09:11:59 PM »
From the Mendeleyev Journal:

Note to dictator Aleksandr Lukashenko: the outrage over the executions you ordered isn't an attempt to make martyrs of the two men convicted of bombing the Minsk Metro's Oktyabrskaya station on 11 April 2011. Fifteen innocent people died in that explosion and over two hundred were injured so they and their relatives deserve justice.

President Lukashenko is seen by many as an embarrassment to the Belorussian people and to the nation he heads by force.  Like the jailing of his opposition, the trials of the two men executed, Vladislav Kanavalau and Dmitry Kavalyou, seemed at times to consist of little more than standard dictatorial show trial material.

The government naturally insisted that the two men received fair trials. People across the world find it hard to believe not because of evidence (there was little), but because of Lukashenko's actions. The citizens of Belarus have seen plenty of brute force, stolen elections and an economy that leaves the average citizen in poverty while their leader enjoys a life of luxury.

Belarus has become Europe's pariah state and we applaud those Europeans calling for a boycott of the 2014 Ice Hockey World Championship scheduled to be hosted in Belarus.

As with all faithful Orthodox we pray for the souls of those lost in that horrible day. May God grant "eternal memory" to those who lost their lives in the tragedy.

What millions of people around the world, across Europe and in Belarus don't trust is the closed system of justice.

The execution of two men convicted of a deadly 2011 metro bomb attack in the Belarusian capital has drawn strong international condemnation.

Have you guys read Yulia Latinina's OP/ED in the Moscow Times this week? I hate to say that she has a very strong argument that you cannot disagree with.
To argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason, and whose philosophy consists in holding humanity in contempt, is like administering medicine to the dead. Thomas Paine - The American Crisis 1776-1783

Muzh, I did. She is correct that we cannot make martyrs of murderers but the other side is justified also in asking questions about the amazing quick arrest and lack of transparency in evidence for the state in pursuing their convictions.

Were they the ones? I don't know...

For G8 he was represented by Medvedev. That actually makes sense if you know their specialties.
