How do you stop?
« on: June 12, 2012, 11:51:19 AM »
How do you stop procrastinating?

I am wasting so much time (including spent on this forum lol)....I am supposed to be revising. Does anyone knows any tricks how to stop procrastinate and do something useful?

During my time on RWD a few gentlemen wondered what I was doing here....The answer is I waste time when I should be revising...

Help!
There are shortcuts to happiness and dancing is one of them.

I do resent the fact that most people never question or think for themselves. I don't want to be normal. I just want to find some other people that are odd in the same ways that I am. OP.

Back in the day I used to play games then cram for 2 days before Uni exams. Revising is tedious.

These days, I browse instead of work. Then cram stress to finish up the boring work I have before the deadlines expire. Makes boring stuff more interesting when there's a short time to do it in. ;)

Perhaps you can just put off procrastinating until later...  :D

Wasn't for me.

Unless I'm incredibly interested, I tend to put things off until the last moment.

That was very good.  8)

The thing is concentration. When you are revising, do not let yourself be distracted.
On the other hand do not go on too long, but take short breaks to get your concentration back.
No it is not a dog. Its really how I look.  ;)

Summary:   Ranetka, can you break down your "revising" into smaller tasks?  If yes, I suggest you assign a schedule to them and reward yourself only when you meet a schedule.

Long-Winded Explanation:  In my university days I could have been a founding member of PA (procrastinators anonymous).   Why?   The same as Ade, I was more productive under stress, perhaps 10x better. Also, I focused on what gave me pleasure (and there were plenty of pleasure opportunities).

Although I graduated with honors I could have done better.  Lazy?  Lack of willpower?   To some degree, yes.  But I learned there was more to the issue.

My career was consulting, and I quickly learned to change out of necessity.   In consulting, everyone's plate is overflowing so every day is almost like cramming.  The difference was that a team of people were on the same assignment and each depended upon the other.

Large assignments must be broken into smaller tasks with interim schedules.  That was key for me - establishing interim deadlines, adhering to them, and somehow making the experience fun.

That worked for me until I stopped working and wrote a book. I fell off the wagon and was mired in procrastination again because writing a book was an individual rather than group exercise.   If anyone called and wanted to play tennis, I would answer with, "Can we do it now?"

  • Remind yourself that there’s always more to be done than can be done. Then ask yourself if you’re getting the right things done.
  • Make a smart to-do list by including only the items that you’re avoiding, not the ones you know you’ll do anyway. Then set deadlines.3
  • Break the task down to lessen the sense of being overwhelmed. Once you start to enjoy a small accomplishment or two, you’re more likely to finish.4
  • Eliminate temptation to do something else. This is your forum distraction  :D
  • Bargain with yourself. If you finish the business plan now, you can reward yourself later.
  • Focus on the success you will achieve and the joy you will feel.
  • Come up with a consequence that will deter you from avoiding the task. ex: If you don’t exercise two times a week, you have to give up talking on the phone with your friends.
  • Ask someone to help you complete the task.
  • Make your intentions public. This will add pressure, but for some of us, avoiding embarrassment is the mightiest motivator.
Just some ideas.....I was really bad at one time.....good luck...
I see that gator has mentioned a few of them already!!!

How do you stop procrastinating?

I am wasting so much time (including spent on this forum lol)....I am supposed to be revising. Does anyone knows any tricks how to stop procrastinate and do something useful?

My most productive moments is when I'm under the gun. At work, most of the things are monotonous in general so I get this silly notion I literally can do these in my sleep. Consequently I subconsciously create some sense of urgency to get my wheels in motion.

Feast or famine paints my work schedule. It's no biggie when things are hectic and multiple deadlines are fast approaching ! I multitask, close my office and crank my music up and meet them all. It's during those slow times that I find so very difficult to deal with.

No help from me but just giving some sort of consolation by saying you're not the only one.

so you find this more interesting than revising?? I am shocked!  :o

LOL

I have an idea...
Find a Fourm on the subject with some entertaining participants and where there is a little  lot of drama.  :arguing:
If one doesn't exist, start one?

That way you waste time doing what you need to do.  :)
and you get you fix of dirty laundry too. :)
