I could't resist to link the English-Russian comedy show in this thread. Unfortunatly only men fluent in russian can appreciate the words game. Two guys discuss the famous russian poem phonetically transcribed in English words. Russian ear can recognize the poem while English eyes see the funny combination of english words.
Example:  russian national poet name Александр Сергеевич Пушкин  is transcribed as Alex under Sir gay evil each Pussy can.
Another example from the show: soldiers in russian army are called дед if they serve over a year. Дед means grandpa but sounds in English as dead.

Well, this would be easy money for me to earn, if I wanted to waste my time.

My Gal would definitely not respond favorably (as neither would several other FSUW I had short conversations with about this); and she would instead slap me up the side of my head.

Reasons: (1)  I am an independent consultant and can make boku bucks on a hourly basis anytime I want to.  She knows this, and knows that ANY time I spent learning a completely irrelevant ANYTHING would subtract from money to go on a trip to RIO or anywhere, or do anything we would like to do.

Wasn't my wager-
but FWIW-

I'm not buying it, your time spent here since she came is hardly viewed as useful by any RW I know. It's highly improbable your Gal finds it valuable,or any more valuable , than knowning some Russian.
 ;)

(2) She and all other gals I had contact with are primarily interested in increasing their English proficiency, and logically know that my ability to interact in a FSU language would seriously retard advancement toward this goal.

Yes most RW want to concentrate on English as its makes perfect sense to do so.

Your abilty to interact in English would be enhanced by knowing a bit of Russian.
Many men would understand thier romantic intertest better if they knew some russian, hardly detrimental.

Yes being somewhat fluent and using that as primary communication could impede her learning English, It's assumed you are both smart enough to not let it be used in that manner.
As said before I know you personally concentrated on English speakers so learning some Russian
certainly isnt as much value to you as most men in the pursuit.

And, any talk of my insensitivity to cultural aspects would be complete hogwash.

I know more than most FSU folks do about their history, geography, economics, cultural antecedents, etc.  An ability to speak their language is not necessary to gain this understanding and appreciation.

You are pretty amusing insulting the aveage Russian's knowledge of their history in the same breath expounding your sensitivity to the subject.

hogwash indeed ML.. lol

I do agree that many men looking and studying the cuklture in depth probably know more historical facts than the average Russian.. it just struck me amusing you stated things in the way you did
:)
