Fabulous!  That was a very enjoyable way to spend half an hour.

I just cannot believe the lack of vehicular traffic then compared with today.  You would think it was more like 1921 than 1961!

In the USSR, private vehicles were not that common in late 50s - early 60s. Also in the 1970s one had to spend lots of efforts in order to get a car of his own.

In the USSR, private vehicles were not that common in late 50s - early 60s. Also in the 1970s one had to spend lots of efforts in order to get a car of his own.

The other thing, of course, is that public transport in Moscow is fantastic, and most people wouldn't actually need a car for everyday living.  I would guess that, even back in 1961, the Metro and buses moved 99% of the commuters.
