A farewell tribute
« on: November 01, 2013, 01:06:44 AM »
Some of us are old enough to say that we're going to miss you, Glen Campbell, but in my case could follow in your footsteps someday as my Mother had Alzheimer's too. I collected all of your 8-tracks and 45 records as a teen, a simple Country Boy. Like so many others at that age, I rode with you and the Wichita Lineman and By The Time we Got To Phoenix, you were Gentle On My Mind.

There was Less of Me when we came to Galveston but Bobbi Gentry was My Elusive Dream. You told us to Try a Little Kindness on those Southern Nights as we sang along to It's Only Make Believe and Where's the Playground, Susie. From Little Green Apples to Dream the Impossible Dream you helped us learn to Let It Be Me.

Honey Come Back showed us your True Grit but when you and Tanya Tucker were Shoulder to Shoulder in those Dream Lover days we were worried that Too Many Mornings were just empty lyrics.

Anne Murray arrived and I'll Say a Little Prayer was more than just a song as we'd seen Both Sides Now. After the Canadian Sunset we could again sing along with United We Stand and Let Me Be the One.

When I first heard the news I thought that It's Only Make Believe because even The Everyday Housewife would gladly Give Me Back That Old Familiar Feeling. I Wanna Live too, Glen and in the words of your 1967 hit, The World I Used To Know, "Someday the world I used to know will come along and bid you go, and I'll leave us behind cause love is just a state of mind."

In The Last Thing On My Mind you sang beautifully, "Please Don't Go. Are You Going Away with No Word of Farewell, will there be not a trace left behind?" Thanks for asking us to Grow Old With Me. We are and I'm glad that you're not really Burning Bridges because Until that day, All I Have to Do is Dream and you'll remain the Rhinestone Cowboy.

Godspeed, Glen.
Thanks to CBS for this great farewell tribute:

May Glen Campbell always Rest in Peace. May his gift of music permeate forevermore...

IINM, Glen Campbell also became a member of the Beach Boys at one time. The number I really liked was the cover he did for the song, 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix'

Say hello to John Denver for us Glen. Thank you.

Dang. After reading and posting on this thread, I got to thinking and just now remembered crossing path with Glen when we played golf at our club in Malibu earlier this year. WOW.

I had this sudden sad and weird feeling to think he's passed away.  :(

EDIT: Alright Mendy. This isn't even April 1st.

For some reason I couldn't believe the guy is dead. My spidey sense tingled and says it ain't so...so I checked...The news of his demise had largely been exaggerated. Apparently an internet hoax. Ha-hah!

No, he isn't dead. His "Farewell Tour" and CBS Farewell Special were to give him a chance to say goodbye while he could stay communicate. That was the point of my post, saying farewell while he could understand it due to Alzheimer's.  :)

GQ, as punishment for doubting your faithful correspondent you must watch "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" sung by a gal,Alenka Pinterič, from Slovenia in her Eastern European accent.

Sorry, you must listen to the entire "performance" and we most certainly use that term loosely, heck we use it very loosely in this case.

I was wondering why the tribute? I know I would've heard if he had passed. I lived for a number of years just down the road from where he was from and is still a legend today. He recently ended his farewell tour in which many complimented him on still "having it". Although he is stricken with Alzheimer's,  reportedly it has little effect on his performance. I would had like to seen one of those shows on his last tour.

Along the same vein, I recently saw Ronnie Milsap. He was a commanding stage presence back in the day but, alas, no longer. Just an old man hanging on

Good grief Mendy, you sure know how administer true torture! Poor GQ.
I couldn't make it through even 15 seconds of her 'performance' before turning the dang thing off!

But you're right. He does deserve it.   ;)

I've got more stamina than you - I made to about 30 seconds before I realised that it really WAS that bad!  :cluebat:
