Costa Concordia Raised!
« on: October 04, 2013, 05:34:58 AM »
Last month the Costa cruise ship that on 13 January, 2012 hit a semi-submerged rock while passing too close to Isola del Giglio and foundered, eventually resting precariously on the rock shelf with a list of about 70°, was finally winched upright in a complex "parbuckling" operation:

Quite an engineering feat on this 110,000-ton ship with an overall length of 290.20 m (952 ft). Next year, after the usual Mediterranean winter storms are over, the wreck will be towed to a suitable port for dismantling, maybe carried piggy-back on the special 275m-long Dutch tug Vanguard:

Apparently it's not worth the trouble, too much structural damage.

An amazing engineering feat!  One jarring (and, to me, insensitive) note, however, in the NBC interview - they provided sub-titles for the two interview subjects speaking perfectly clear English!  Is their target demographic so insular that they can't cope with any English other than the American version?

If the English is spoken in anything other than the perfect American version, then there is the need for some help for people world wide.
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.
