Crazy/Funny events after immigration.
« on: January 04, 2014, 05:37:25 PM »
With all the usual bantering about serious topics, I wondered if it might be fun to hear the stories from newlyweds that immigrated recently.

Since my wife is not yet fluent in English, we occasionally use Skype translate to clarify something too complex to convey without it.  (I noticed Gator admitted to the same thing)   ;D
While typing a post a few minutes ago, I got a Skype call.......from the other end of the house.  "Can you show me how to turn on the oven?"

It seems that everyday there are crazy things that happen at our home.  Don't remember if I posted it earlier but one surprise was to find a can of air freshner in the refrigerator (the container is the same appearance and size as the Coffeemate she bought at the store).

It's just starting Doug, just wait until she starts playing hide and go seek with everything in your house. Iryna decided to do some rearranging when she got here and I'm still trying to find some of my things!

Take how you felt helpless for the weeks you visited and them multiply that exponentially to understand her feelings of helpless and disorientation.

In many FSU homes there is panel in the bathroom behind or beside the toilet. For starters, FSU ladies are often used to split bath and toilet and to some, having the toilet in the bathroom is going to feel weird. For others it is normal. But behind the toilet, or under the sink pedestal is often where you'll find any tools (hammer, pliers, screwdrivers, etc) that may reside in her small apartment. I've heard of ladies moving the man's tools from the garage shelf or hallway shelf into the bathroom as that is just where she feels they belong.

We make a lot of joint decisions these days but early on in our first remodel she told me that it is the woman's job to have an opinion on the design and redecoration and the man's job is not to have an opinion. I smiled because I've been around women for ages and sure enough, before long she was asking "what do you think?" just as I suspected.

On her earlier times in the USA she had some funny sayings. We'd be about ready to leave church and she's say something like "we must go to home and take off clothes."  She mean to change clothes and as our USA church is Russian, most are fellow immigrants and would understand what she was saying, but I'm sure there were America members who thought I was getting laid every single Sunday afternoon. Additionally, she would put an extra 'es' at the end of clothes so it came out as 'clotheses' until she improved her English.

I sometimes say goofy things in Russia but not as often anymore. At the dacha I've been guilty of carrying an empty bucket, a no-no according to many, so if others are around I've learned to put something in the bucket, like a cloth towel or small tool, etc. Heaven forbid that we'd go to pick mushrooms, berries, or gather cucumbers and tomatoes and take an empty bucket to the garden!

I feel lucky so far.  Only  the kitchen utensils have been rearranged.  Finding my clothes is another matter.  I ran out of pajamas in the normal drawer and discovered them hanging in one of the closets along with some shirts I couldn't find.  I suppose it's going to get worse.

And you weren't?  You let these opportunities pass you by every week?

too numerous to mention really  ;D ;D ;D

AND  they still occur sometimes , however now i just usually roll with it when we have 3 jars of jam open at once , or several bottles of mineral water half finished , you find cups in random places with tea bags and a slice of cooked lemon in them , lol  , or saved half slices of toast back in the bread box for later,

old habits , from her past  it usually just gives me a smile as it is part of her that i love ,

im sure i have similar habits which she notices and hardly ever tries to ''control '' me over , lol

my lovely wife will still ask if i can ''feel '' the smell of something , or use slang words with a FSU twist to them ,
we found over time we kind of developed our  words we both knew like code between us for humourous understanding of something ,

SX
Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.
