Western Australia - sending a child to school on tourist visa .
« on: January 30, 2014, 06:34:54 PM »
Since my Fiancee is here with her daughter on  600 class tourist visa with limited study of up to 3 months , we thought we would give it a go .
I will add this is for Western Australian Government schools only and varies from state to state .
You will need to fill out the enrolment form on the ATI ( Australian Training International ) Supply a copy of the visa with application and any other school reports or school documents . It will take about 7-10 days to process if all goes smoothly . You will have to pay for a minimum of one month and then weekly depending on the time the child will be at school . If you are enrolling under any temporary visa , you will have limited school choices ( there is a list on the site when you fill in the forms )  and the public schools will not deal with you directly , until they  are citizens. I am told you can approach a private school directly , but religious schools is then the only other choice here in Perth - unless of coarse you find one of those alternative schools .
I will add the people at the ATI are very helpful and actually gave very good information in regards to this .
Hopefully this points some one in the right direction in the future as it was impossible to find anything understandable on the net .     It is actually surprisingly easy -- So far   :):) Good luck to all :)  Ps below is a copy of an email I received from the local headmaster ..

Thank you for your enquiry. It is only today that Administrators have returned to work for the first time in 2014 so this is the first opportunity we have had to give you the information that you have requested.

All people who have Visas of  the kind you have or similar, and who wish for their child to attend school at a government school in Western Australia must apply to do so through “Education and Training International (ETI)”. Schools do not directly involve themselves in the enrolment of children with the type of visa your Fiancé’s daughter has.

You will need to contact ETI directly and speak with them about the enrolment. The phone number for them is 9218 2100. They will then attend to your questions, give you advice and arrange what is possible.

I do hope that this information answers your questions and assists you in what you are trying to achieve.

this is not correct above , ime , unless barnett has very recently [since jan 2014 ] changed the rules locally

i think it is for tourist, student and 457 type visas there advising you about maybe ?

fiance, temporary residence and permananent residence visa did allow us to send our child to school here and SWIT[old tafe ] all for the usual citizen costs of school fees same as any local kid to any public school in the state that we lived closest too

met with school principal one day , child started school next  day

the intention under a fiancee /temporary resident visa , etc etc is to stay and live in australia permanentlly , even while your not a citizen
other types of visas are not as clear on the intent usually , may be why you got the response you did on a tourist visa jeff

Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

Hi Southernx ,, I just got off the phone again with ETI . I am told as long as the visa has permission to study , she can attend school regardless of the visa number or subclass -This is all the ETI care about anyway :) Some subclass do not allow it , but if the visa says study allowed ,they are happy .

I am now aware we filled in the wrong form ..
Here is the directions to the correct form if you are here on tourist visa and wish for your child to study . Go to the ETI website, go to home , click-about us , go to the bottom of the list and click Overseas student application and that's the one you want . You will be expected to pay the fees on a weekly basis after paying a minimum of one month .
Iasked her several times , if the visa number is relevant , she said no as long as it says study ok . She also gave me her direct line to help us through it if we needed ..
So tonight we will try again with the correct form .
Ps- I will reiterate that , we are not entitled to any assistance or subsidies and it will still come down to the principals decision as to whether they take her for such a small time period . Which can extend the time it will take before finding a school that is close and willing to take on a short stay student . ?? I will update when we know more .   Cheers .
Ps I did explain to the lady in detail our situation and visa conditions and this was what she told me , so fingers crossed . :):):)PPs , I will add it would be better to lodge this form as early on as possible - unlike me ;)
