Lenin Statues Toppled Across Ukraine

Protesters in Bila Tserkva, Khmelnitsky, Zhytomyr in western Ukraine used ropes and crowbars to bring down statues of Lenin which are seen as a symbol of Moscow's rule across the former USSR.



The above video is just one of many emerging that show a number of Lenin Statues being felled.

It should be pointed out that this is just the tip of the iceberg.  I was talking to a friend in Oleksandria today and she told me that that city's statue was also brought down.   She did so with great sadness.  According to local tradition, when a couple gets married after taking their vows they would go to the Lenin statue and place flowers.  She cared not for Lenin, but for the tradition surrounding the statue.

Apparently many of the residents of the various cities no longer wish to have the reminder of Soviet domination and are opting for a different course than fealty to Russia.

Has anyone else heard news in other cities?

Protestors did try and pull the Lenin statue down in Kharkov,but pro-Russian supporters beat them back..a lot of fighting.


Lenin statues have been pulled down in Dnepropetrovsk and Chernigov.

I guess the possibility to make a quick buck from the scrap metal did not influence anyone.

And finally, for those that have been to Dnepropetrovsk, it is sad to see this monument go down.  I understand the underlying feeling, but when you have enjoyed taking pictures in front of a statue and then see it being toppled, it is just kinda sad.
