Perceptions of the Cold War
« on: March 20, 2014, 08:17:39 PM »
Some seem intent on seeing the worst possible outcomes..  I wish I could truly say ignore the numerous Chicken Littles, but.. there is a chance, hopefully a very slight chance the sky is indeed going to fall soon.

IMHO, relations between the US and FSU are the worst they have ever been in my lifetime, and that change was quick.

That's possibly due to the fact I'm more aware of world events than I used to be, but to put that into perspective,  I was 4 years old when the US landed on the moon.  Now might be a good time to take up selling nuclear bunker installations and producing duck & cover videos.. circa 1950s, granted it'll likely be a waste of time & money, but those that capitalized on it made fortunes.

Hopefully this tension blows over soon... if anything to get the doom and gloom out of this forum  ;D

Dewed, what were you doing in the 70's and 80's besides weed?

School, a local professional musician, serving my country and becoming a self taught computer programmer, but in retrospect, I was blind to world politics that didn't immediately affect my corner of the globe and still convinced others had my best interest at heart. By early 2000 it was blatantly obvious that wasn't the case. My eyes were opened so to speak.

Still I don't recall the wind down of the previous cold war involving invasions, it seemed to be each side intimidating the other with their fingers hovering over the launch buttons of ICBMs, threatening to kill the entire planet 9 times over, but yes, I was admittedly more ignorant then.. I probably even watched O'Reilly occasionally back then and believed every word.

and it is IN MY HUMBLE OPINION.. in case you missed that part. Wrong as it may be, last I checked, I'm entitled to it.

No, I didn't miss that part and as flawed as it may be, it's wrong. In the cold war years tensions stayed at a high escalation, much higher than present day. Both the U.S. and Russia were constantly agitating each other at various spots around the world. Wherever conflict broke out (often it was initiated by the U.S. or the USSR) one or both countries would rush in under the guise of aid looking for a way to defeat or embarrass the other.

Frankly quantifying the tension level of mankind is a matter of perception. At the time I personally did not perceive the threat of mutual annihilation as plausible.. No one could be that stupid, and it would seem, I was right. I also had the perception of a future, career and an education to focus on at the time. You know, the care free days of yesteryear.

if you insist on debating and correcting my perceptions, can we simply agree things were and are again tense and be done with it

Or, we can just leave it at this; there is your perception of the 70s-80s and then there is reality and they don't know each other

sure fine, like I said.. I had more tangible and immediate things to focus on , I got all trained up just in time for the Falklands.. which was over before I got my boots tied... I guess I was just born at the wrong place and time. I'll work on that problem in order to experience  it the way you did.. I didn't dwell on it the way you apparently did and I didn't think either side was likely to use nukes the way you apparently did. To me it was a contest of who can rattle their saber the loudest.... and sorry.. my perception is the only reality I have.. if it was identical to yours.. that would be just plain weird.

The Falklands? Really Dewed? Which side were you all trained up for? I didn't dwell on it Dewed, I lived it. Saber rattling is for those with no intention of war. My nose gets a bit out of joint when folks who don't know death, dying or war wish to discount it or play act like they do. Ignorance is bliss, enjoy yours

Wow .. ok then. I can't help but wonder if this is some sort of attempt to illicit a disproportionate response.. you want it you got it   BANNED !!!

.. just kidding.., but it is obvious we are from different environments. A fact for which I am thankful. If you served, thank you for your service. If you saw combat, I'm sorry, if you lost friends or family, my condolences, and if you think I'm ungrateful you are wrong, but I refuse to apologize for not being you.

I've never asked you to apologize for anything. That's your call. You're the one who got your panties in a wad when I asked what you did in the 70-80s besides weed. From your earlier remarks you apparently were born in the mid-60's and if you didn't know about the U.S./USSR relations, your head was planted firmly in your anus and you were completely oblivious or something else was at play. I gave you the benefit of doubt. In my dry humor I guessed weed but, I suppose it could be the prior.

This is a forum guy, it's purpose is dialogue. If you even think for a minute you want to ban me, knock yourself out. No sweat off my ass.

Faux Pas, it's probably best you step away from the computer, take a chill pill, and enjoy your family instead of getting fired up over a little disagreement on the internet.
Fund the audits, spread the word and educate people, write your politicians and other elected officials. Stay active in the fight to save our country. Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776.

If a weatherman predicts 100 days of rain, and it does not rain for 100 days.. do you carry an umbrella for the entire 100 days?  On day 101 do you say "Gee I'm glad the threat of rain is over" ?

My entire childhood and most of my teens it was always "going to rain".  It simply lost all credibility, so no, I did not take it seriously.. Now, here we go again, it's day one.. and yes, I have an umbrella.

Finally I'll also point out, I'm a Freelance web developer, and have been for much of my adult life.. Google my name you'll find I'm involved in the evil Weed (what some might call medical marijuana) , Dentistry.Real Estate, home remodeling, photography, music recording, stage lighting, comedy clubs, beer, tourism, bowling alleys.. really any legal industry that might have a reason for a website.. except for porn. I refuse to work on those sites.

I'm sorry you find my line of work offensive.

Dewed there is nothing else for me to say. The reality of the Cold War and your perception is completely different and your history of web development doesn't change that one iota. Although, it might explain your complete ignorance on the subject and more specifically, your head being stuck in your butt. Go ahead, tell me some more of your web achievements, we can compare if it changes history. Let's not discuss your perception. I think we've already covered how delusional that is, haven't we?

Billy, I don't get excited over anything on these boards. Nothing here for me to get fired up over. You'd be better served paying attention to your own wife than worrying about my family.  ;D

your head being stuck in your butt.

Pot meet kettle, kettle meet pot..

So you did actually carry the umbrella for 100 days.. that explains much.

 Have a nice day :-X

Your analogies are as far in the dark to reality as you are. Not relevant or germane to this discussion at all. I've no doubt you'd carry an umbrella for 100 days. Me, I would have found another weatherman on the 3-4th day
