Hello all,
I tried to go to Mariupol. I did not get there. I flew to Germany and by the time I got there the airport closed. I hung out in Germany for a day and came back to usa. It wss a real nightmare.

Semper fi! Sorry about your experience. Informationally, my fiancee, returning from Punta Cana, was scheduled from Kyiv to Donetsk on 7 May; faced with that airport closure, she simply waited at the airport. Donetsk re-opened in the afternoon and she arrived a few hours late. Her backup plan was a train from Kyiv to Luhansk, her ultimate destination. If you were booked on Lufthansa, you could have had the airline re-route you to Kyiv or Odesa, and taken the train to Mariupol...or to stay out of the combat zone, you could have rendezvoused in a less threatened city, such as Mykolaiv or Dnipropetrovsk.

Really?? don't you read the news AT ALL???? And you were not aware about the antiterroristic operation in Eastern Ukraine, the terrosts, checkpoints, and abductions (including of the OSCE mission and American journalists) and killings (of civilians and military, some tortured before killed) in Eastern Ukraine? You didn't hear about "peaceful pro-Russian activists" (aka terrorists and Russian subversive groups) walking around the Eastern Ukrainian towns (Mariupol included) with AKs, portable machine guns, and portable grenade launchers, and occupying the city administration and police buildings, and taking down the Ukrainian military helicopters with MANPAD rocket launchers? You missed all that despite reading about Mariupol, and decided to go there AT THIS TIME???  :wallbash: :wallbash:

Oh well....

To say I am nieve about the situation could not be further from the truth.  I was in constant contact with the woman , and she wss shocked that it happened.  It was not my first trip to Mariupol. I had carefully watched over the events in Donetsk oblast ovrr the past few months. I also listened to advice from people who have been visiting recently and the woman herself.
So I did not go in blind. I wanted to sneak in a trip before the situation changed. To have to wait a long time to develop a relationship is not good.  I was not going there to stuff her in my suitcase and take her home.

So you did see the photos of three corpses fished out of the river with their bellies cut-opened, naked, wearing nothing but the backpacks filled with sand.  You did read that one of those corpses was a local council member and the other two were visitors of the town. The patologoanatoms concluded that the bellies of these three people were "opened" when they were alive, after which the three man with their entrails falling out of them were placed in the the river, with the backpacks full of sand - to make sure they don't swim away.

You did watch the interview of Simon Ostrovsky after his safe return to USA.
You did read the news about three military helicopters taken down, with professional technique, using the MANPAD rocket launchers and other weapons, and you did read about all pilots who were killed in these accidents.
You did read about the paratrooper killed by the exploded grenade, launched at him from fairly short range from a grenade launcher.
You did read about people abducted from the streets, shoved into the cars, and then held captive by the terrorists (some, tortured) for days or even weeks. And some - found the following day after the abduction either burnt or hung.
You possibly even saw the video of one of the terrorists commenting on abduction of Simon Ostrovsky saying "yes, we abduct people, we need to abduct as many as we can, and someone who is worthy, who can be traded for our arrested compatriots."  The American journalist Simon Ostrovsky was traded for a terrorist who was held in the custody of the Ukrainian police.

You read all those news and you decided "well, this place is just as good as any other. Love sees no obstacles."  :cluebat:

This is a baseball bat - a popular (lethal, if used properly, although inferior to AK, of course) weapon of pro-russian separatists in Eastern Ukraine. Used to attack anyone who disagrees, can be used to reduce the number of teeth, change the shape of the nose, or crush the skull - as it was done to a university professor in Kharkov after he went to a peaceful protest. Now he needs a metal plate in his skull.

Go easy on him Mies. The guy is a combat veteran and been in actual war worse than the unrest in east Ukraine. He was educated on what went on over there and he also knows most of the population is still alive. There's risk, but minimal risk anything harmful would come to him. Theguide made an attempt to go under less than ideal circumstances. He deserves respect for that. Hopefully the events over there will bring him and his lady closer instead of further apart.
Fund the audits, spread the word and educate people, write your politicians and other elected officials. Stay active in the fight to save our country. Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. The Russian subversive groups who are operating in the Eastern Ukraine were in the ACTUAL wars (several of them) in Chechnya and other heated locations. Don't forget that Russia in the past 20 something years took an part in 8 different wars or military conflicts. When a person is at the war as a military - he is equipped and ready. What exactly he will be doing if stopped on the street by a group of men with loaded AKs and smaller guns? Run? Engage into the combat? They'll shoot him on spot and that'd be it.

What was wrong with inviting the woman to Kyiv? or Lviv? Lviv has an airport. He could have flew to either one of these cities.

BB-- I think Mies graphic comments are on the mark--the guy answered that he was on top of info-- despite numerous people trying to point out why he was being nieve-- a point subsequently born out. I am 100% in guys corners for trying-- but there is nothing normal in Ukraine right now. The forum has many guys with experience and direct current contacts who have access to good info-- seeing guys choose to ignore it shows a less than acceptable lack of common sense.
As to the guys background-well-- that can mean a lot of things-- and does not automatically say he is capable. His lack of acceptance of what he was being told showed a lack of common sense.Of course--the forum has more than it's share of rubbish posters--but amongst that-there is some good info worth noting. There are also a number of people that will offer advice and help privately as well as in open forum-- and heck-- some have even been in Ukraine !!
SLAVA UKRAYINI  ! HEROYAM SLAVA!!!!
Слава Украине! Слава героям слава!Слава Україні! Слава героям!
translated as: Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!!!  is a Ukrainian greeting slogan being used now all over Ukraine to signify support for a free independent Ukraine

We have to remember, info on what is happening on the ground was also coming from his lady who actually lives in the city and that is more important what anybody else has to say. Theguide trusted his lady and he simply got unlucky. The airport in Mariupol shut down on his way there. Things escalated at the wrong time.

During the crisis in Crimea, there were posters here telling Wayne to go to Crimea to get his wife out. Was that advice crazy? Theguide knew there were risks and he felt the lady was worth it. Blown trip but he scored some points in the MAN department.
