Anthony Bourdain on Putin and Russian Cuisine/Culture
« on: May 14, 2014, 10:06:02 AM »
One of my favorite TV programs is CNN's Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.   Tony is a clever and amusing travel/food/culture journalist.  Last week CNN aired the episode of his visit to Russia just before the Sochi Olympics.

Tony is known for getting to the cultural and political underbelly of places he visits along with sampling the finest examples of local cuisine.  He does not hold back punches.  The episode for Russia was even more political than usual.  He had this to say about Putin:

He likened Putin to "Donald Trump but shorter" with all the dictator issues that some short men tend to manifest.  He compared Russian citizens to New York democrats who voted for Giuliani.   He closes with a comment about the annexation of Crimea:  “The world has done nothing. It will do nothing, as Vladimir well knew.  He wins, again.”

He harped on Putin's repression of journalists,  political critics, gays, music group, etc., even touching the subject of murder. The show included a dinner with Boris Nemtsov.

The full show is not available but these short clips are a good sample:

Finally, an earlier trip several years ago with less on politics and more about the Russian soul

I enjoy some of Anthony Bourdain's shows.  I especially enjoy the shows done in FSU destinations with his guide Zamir.  I think he's done bits in Kiev, Uzbekistan, Crimea, and I think also Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Anthony Bourdain is one of my favorites. I watched the show. Wasn't one of his best but interesting all the same.

He got wiped out in Sevastopol at Balaklava with lunchtime vodkas!! He was not well for the next day's filming !! It is a reasonable show on Ukraine.
SLAVA UKRAYINI  ! HEROYAM SLAVA!!!!
Слава Украине! Слава героям слава!Слава Україні! Слава героям!
translated as: Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!!!  is a Ukrainian greeting slogan being used now all over Ukraine to signify support for a free independent Ukraine
