Hello world
« on: December 07, 2014, 10:38:12 AM »
After lurking here for a while and some inexplicable trouble in getting my forum registration approved, I'm in!

No newbie questions from me at this time, I've RTFF a good bit already.

I'm another one of those never-married upper 40's guys who feels younger and thought he was a special snowflake in that regard until arriving here and reading similar posts.  Damn.  Anyway, focus on career led me to stay too long in a non-productive area for meeting suitable ladies, and by then I was not dumb enough to make the mistakes that were available to me.

The FSU idea appeals to me because of the hopefully greater possibility of finding a special someone with a fair degree of education, who actually uses her head. I've met some wonderful ladies from different parts of the world, but they're not all that common and are usually committed to someone else when I meet them.  Still, knowing they exist makes me unwilling to settle for just a roommate with benefits.

I have been to about 10% of the world's countries so far, including PL, CZ and HU in the FSU, but am looking further east this time.  So I am not someone reluctant to travel, and I'm making rough plans to go to Ukraine after the worst of the winter is over, political situation permitting.

So there we are, first post complete, except for saying that I'm glad to be here, and I'm appreciative of the information I've already gleaned from the folks who have taken the time and effort to post.  When I have something to add, I hope to return the favor.

Welcome to the forum.  You might start by meeting and dating local FSU women.  You can find them by placing a profile on Mamba.  It's a lot easier to do and most of the women are already fluent or near it in English.  It might help you get a better grasp on their mentality.  Also if you date a woman that some other guy sponsored and is still financially supporting, it might give you pause in your eagerness to sponsor a woman from Ukraine so quickly.

FSUW have a guideline - something is wrong with a man who is 40 and has never married.  You can overcome it; plus not having children from a past marriage is a positive in FSUW's eyes.

There are many FSUW with advanced degrees.  Some are using their education in a professional career.  Others had to work less technical jobs because of the economy.  Study a woman's profile  and use Skype to focus on what you seek.

Some fine looking women is these Warsaw Pact countries (not FSU countries).  On average, women there are on more equal footing with you than FSUW.  So what happened to make you go further East?

They may be right.  But, that's the hand I have to play.

It's not a question of qualifications on paper for me, it's more of an attitude and an outlook.  The one I'll settle down with, if it happens, no matter where she's from, will have an open and inquiring mind.

Thanks for the clarification.  It's been a while since terms like Warsaw Pact were in my consciousness.

I wasn't looking to date when I was in those countries, or any of the others, really, although I have ended up on dates in some of them.  I just like to travel, see different places and learn about different cultures.  There are things I like about other cultures, and today's US culture, and other things I don't like so much - so what else is new?  I generally travel on my own, so that I'm forced to meet people, and it's worked out well so far.

Why go east?  The basic answer is that it's a numbers game, which is the plain unromantic truth at the base of a search for a mate.  I'm an engineer and have an analytic mind, so I can play with numbers all day long, but it comes down to how many suitable potential mates there are for any of us out there.  People can (and do!) argue about the winnowing process, but if it comes down to, say, one in 100,000 (to use a round number) is a possibility, and I live in a city with 400,000 within the commuting radius, there would be about 4 here.  And how do I get in touch with them?  So it makes sense to widen the search area, so that I can meet more women.  Once I meet them, the process is the same as always; it's the problem of meeting suitable women that's been the trouble for me, as it has for many folks here on this site.  (Yes, I've done the online dating site thing here, and been disappointed - same song, umpteenth verse.)  I've always done OK in person; I just need to get some more face-to-face meetings with ladies with compatible attitudes - and what those are is mine to determine, just like anyone else's are theirs to determine, and probably theirs are different from mine.

From extensive schooling and extensive travel I've met people from all over the world, and while I'm firmly in the "people are people, no matter where in the world" camp, there are regional differences.  In general I've liked the attitudes of many of the eastern Europeans I've met, and find them to be more compatible for me than, say, Asians or South Americans.  So I'm interested in looking east.  At the least I'm expecting a vacation to a new country, plus I might enjoy meeting some nice people, and who knows, something more might come of it.

Welcome SlowCooker.

Hey, we want what we want.  It's a lot easier for me to like what I see than to be happy with my copilot at the end of a long road trip.  I want good company.  This probably why I get told I'm too picky.

Thanks all for the welcomes!
