There are worse problems....
« on: March 04, 2015, 08:05:12 AM »
While there is a conflict in Ukraine, sanctions against Russia and of course the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, people have to be made aware of a much more serious matter.

Currently my country is under attack. The situation is still local but who knows when it will get worse.
While this is still 250 kilometers (400 miles) away, I am taking precautionary measures to evacuate.

See a report about the horror that is dominating the news in the Netherlands.

No it is not a dog. Its really how I look.  ;)

Obviously this is Putin at work again trying to cause chaos around the world.  I can't believe the Russian propaganda machine can even turn owls into killing machines.  Ask LT about his dress.

On a side note, I remember my time in Australia and needing to be aware of some of the birds there that would become aggressive.

Owls are highly evolved, magnificent creatures.

Do you know that owls hunt primarily by sound, especially in the day?  Their hearing is 10x better than humans, in part because their face is shaped like a satellite dish with feathers that transmit sound waves.  One of their ears is higher than the other to pinpoint exact locations of sound sources based on the infinitesimal difference in audio reception time.  Thus they can snatch a field mouse hidden under several cm of snow.

The owl is a stealth attacker, making no sound as it approaches.  The sound of wings moving can be recorded for almost all species of birds in flight, but not for the owl.   One problem, the feathers enabling soundless flight do not repel water, creating a problem for nesting parents protecting the young in heavy rain.  Thus, one defensive mechanism is to spray water at an attacking owl if you can spot the bird before it strikes.  So carry a water gun unless banned in your country.

An attacking owl is one of the stronger raptors.  Once in their grip, you can not pull the talons away until the owl is ready to release.

I could go on and on.   Owls attacking humans is rare.  Any idea why in this specific case?

I thought 250 km was close to 150 miles.

I think he means the other way around - 400 km is approximately 250 miles.

Ineed.... the whole country is upside-down  :clapping:

It is thought this one has lived in captivity and has escaped its owner, as a result it does not have the usual fear of humans that most wild animals (rightly) display.
As the bird is highly protected it will have to be captured, it can not be killed.

It could be a really old owl, suffering from dementia.  It might think that it is a really young owl and chasing young women is its past time.

No.  I just imagined that to be a self description.  (Looking in the mirror, so to speak.)
