For those traveling to, or inside of Russia, be mindful that 12 June is the "Day of Russia" and equal to what the 4th of July is to Americans. It is a day of great celebrating (translation: drinking).
Nationalism is at an all time high in Russia. Feelings towards the West, and especially towards nations like America, Canada, and the UK are at an all time low. Add intense nationalism with alcohol and you have possible problems.
Last week on a flight from Amsterdam to Moscow I was pulled out of the que at the gate by a Russian official and denied permission to board the flight. It was resolved the next day, but cost me an extra day in Amsterdam which on the surface is annoying, but allowed me an additional day there which I was able to use it for riding the trains and photographing the city. However, message received: you are a guest here, and do not control your own destiny.
In the past week I was reminded by an official that the charter of the Mendeleyev Journal is to document "life, events, art, culture, language and music in Russia." The unspoken but obvious message was that perhaps the Journal had strayed into politics. That led to my effort to educate the speaker on the definition of the word "events." I cannot report positive results at my educational attempts.
Twice in the past five days I have been asked why America wants war with Russia? In both cases I asked why the person (random on the street) would ask me such question? The answer has been consistent: Russian TV news.
Those in foreign media do stick out like a sore thumb at times as there is a badge which is required to be visible on my camera strap. Thus, the typical tourist might not be addressed as such, but over the past months there has been a visible uptick of document checks on those who might not look like ethnic Russians, or who carry luggage of any kind in public.
Please feel free to travel to this great country, but be aware of your surroundings. On and around 12 June, I would think it best to make certain that you are rarely out alone. Your Russian friend is your natural buffer, so keep one nearby.
