EMC - European Medical Center in Moscow
« on: January 20, 2016, 08:44:19 PM »
After a bad surgery experience in Texas, Stepdaughter appears determined to go to EMC in Moscow for a nose revision rhinoplasty procedure.   She has sent them various documents and they gave her an estimate of $13000.  Is anyone familiar with this facility? And specifically the doctor Levin in the photo?
http://www.emcmos.ru/en/clinics/aesthetic-clinic
She is married now so this is pretty much her decision to make.  However my wife will have to go along also.   Do Russian doctors usually stick to their price quotes?  My main concern is that something could go wrong, and she would have no more money with her for additional treatment (except for my credit cards).  Even getting the 13k into Moscow could present difficulties.

Levin is considered to be one of the best (and expensive) plastics surgery doctors here. But he is a little specific from what I have heard:))  He sometimes does not listen to the patient and suggests what he thinks is better. The results are usually good though.
He will tell her the final price only after real meeting, and if everything goes ok, no additional payment is needed. But still  I suggest her to have some additional money (credit cards work here and I think they take visa/master card) in case smth goes wrong.

EMC in Moscow

I can't speak for the doctor your stepdaughter wants to use but EMC isn't the best hospital in Russia according to the link below. It ranks as the 12th best hospital in Russia and 1065th best in the world. I don't want to be accused of bias by using a hospital ranking done in America so I chose this hospital ranking which was conducted by a Spaniard research center. To get to Russian only hospitals, scroll over the Europe tab and then click the Russian flag.

The ratings seem to be based on things like # web links to them, and # technical papers on Internet.
Strange way to rate a medical center.

Yes, it has nothing to do with the actual care or quality of the hospital. It deals with the web presence, published papers, and backlinks.

"Cybermetrics Lab is devoted to the quantitative analysis of the Internet and Web contents specially those related to the processes of generation and scholarly communication of scientific knowledge. This is a new emerging discipline that has been called Cybermetrics (our team developed and publishes the free electronic journal Cybermetrics since 1997) or Webometrics."

EMC could be number one if they just publish some one liners and post them on an .edu site and harness the power of SAPE....  8)

I took a look on the way they compiled their rankings and you're right. Just looking at the front page looks like they do have the best hospitals in the world approximately where they should be so seemed like every other hospital ranking out there with little difference. Oh well, a waste of research based off the quality of hospital websites IMO.

It has a good reputation. But Moscow does have some good hospitals that would be a lot less expensive.

She is also considering another location, Center for Aesthetic Surgery, HTTP://ESTHETICCENTER.RU/
She is also considerting the above doctor.  The price on their web site is about $5000.  I assume she might get some insurance coverage from those prices.  Price in Texas is $13000 before insurance, and $7000 after insurance.  Anyone know anything about Estheticcenter ?

After a bad surgery experience in Texas, Stepdaughter appears determined to go to EMC in Moscow for a nose revision rhinoplasty procedure.   She has sent them various documents and they gave her an estimate of $13000.

Price appears rather more than here - from one of our leading plastic surgeons:

At the time of writing a typical two hour day-case primary rhinoplasty cost ranges from $12,000 to $14000 total cost. A complex revision taking 4 hours with a night in hospital may cost $16000 to $20000. A more accurate cost can be provided after your initial consultation.

Our dollar is worth about $0.67 US, so maybe $13,500 US for the full revision and hospital stay.

However, the kicker here relates to the opening clause of what you wrote:

After a bad surgery experience in Texas,...

Assuming that the "bad surgery" was by accident, this would qualify here as medical misadventure, and so:

If you have had an accident and require a corrective Rhinoplasty the total cost will be met by ACC.

"ACC" is our Accident Compensation Corporation, to which we all pay levies through our taxes.  Employers pay the premiums to cover work accidents, and everybody pays a levy to cover non-work accidents (my total is around $125 a year).  Even though nobody wants to have an expensive procedure, there is sometimes no choice.  It's good to know that such an operation (if the result of an accident) won't cost me anything if I have to go privately.

She should call the clinic and ask about the education and experience of the doctor and have them send them photos of the work they've done. Never use a doctor with little experience. I know doctors got to get experience somewhere but it's not going to be on me.

I don't know if the job she had done in Texas was negligent or just didn't turn out the way she liked. How the doctor reshapes the bone and cartilage in the nose and how the flesh heals can affect the finished look.

It is not unusual to have some minor breathing issues through the nose canals after these types of surgeries.  That is covered by insurance.  Anything cosmetic is not covered.  Some people need 4 or 5 operations to get it right.  The doctor in Texas is one of the highest rated in US.  But it is not my decision.

After visiting a few medical centers, stepdaughter chose this one in StP (see video below).  Complex procedure was successful.  Not sure yet how much cost was.  But with dollar/ruble situation, prices on their web site seem to be quite good.
