It's September 1st so today is "Day of Knowledge", the first day of school. Kids dressed up in traditional clothes, brought flowers for teachers and little girls rang bells.

As an aside- to prevent too much celebrating, all alcohol sales were banned today (at least in the major markets).

Yes indeed, an important date celebrated in Russia.  My wife did not understand why the first day of school in America was not a big deal.   


Sadly, 1 September is also the date of Beslan school siege, 12 years ago.

I was standing on my balcony in Kiev on sept. 1st, 2012 and noticed a dressed up family with a child walking on the sidewalk. At first glance it surprised me, but then I remembered a good post Mendy wrote about First Bell.
