Counterfeit Alcohol Leaves More Than 50 Dead In Ukraine This Fall

We've all heard about the dangers of counterfeit hooch there, but this batch has caused a lot of deaths.

At least 53 people died and more than 30 were hospitalized in string of alcohol poisoning cases across Ukraine since late September. Authorities arrested a man suspected of producing bootleg alcohol in his home, but they have not yet managed to pull all of the dangerous liquor from the market.

My wife told me there is a factory outside the city limits of Odessa. At one point the batch was bad and her uncle along with his friends grabbed as much as they could from behind the warehouse and proceeded to sell and drink it. There is no such thing as bad alcohol in Ukraine.


She also tells me after the fall of the USSR her babushka made extra money by sewing dresses and making moonshine. People had to survive. Police officers knew she did it but let it slide.


Father in law makes some excellent home made wine from the grapes he grows in the yard I am told. Very common in Ukraine.

My father in law used to make wine quite frequently before he passed.  Mother in law would not let him use any sugar in it, too expensive to waste on wine, so the wine was "dry" shall we say.  However I would drink it and tell him how great it was as I am a very good son in law.  ha ha.
