Thanks for posting these, tfcrew. It appears that quakes have struck on at least half a dozen different fault lines in both main islands, some seemingly cracking as a result of pressure from the original fault. Death toll is still only two, thankfully. However, the CNN story has a couple of facts wrong, starting with the location of the initial quake. Even though it has officially been named the Kaikoura Earthquake, It was actually centered close to the little town of Culverden, somewhat to the west of the big red dot on their map, and half-way between Christchurch and Kaikoura. However, very many of the aftershocks have been centered within about 30 km of Kaikoura (in every direction), or to the east of a little town called Seddon (about 90 km north of Kaikoura), and the seabed close to shore has lifted up at least two metres (even out of the water in a couple of places).
There's also no such thing as the Marlborough "government" - it's called the Marlborough District Council.
Other than that, there have now been well over a thousand aftershocks - including five in the last ten minutes and 24 in the last hour as I write this.

Luckily, none of the latest ones are anything to write home about. The last quake rated as "severe" by our Geological Service was five hours ago.
