The usual method is to give them a Check/Debit Card on an account opened in the States for that purpose, monthly deposit the agreed upon amount, and inform her when she can withdraw the cash using the debit card.

A good idea. Fast, easy, accountable, controlable...I did this with my son when her ventured off to college. There is a cash limit of course. There are other cards that  you can give her. Phone calling card for example. Internet card.

thanks j.b.  and turboguy for input.  but don't worry , I am treading slowly.  It was just a curiousity question, and she did not ask for money, just said it would  be a few days before she could have $ to access computer until payday.  her rent is 130 US month.  She has one child.  I have been there , done that with A.W. and this is nothing like that.  I can afford a little one time $ to see what happens, and then run,run if it looks like i am being taken advantage of.  I am planning to see at least her in next couple of months when my trip is planned out.  Having my own business , I just can not jump in jet and fly over.  I need a vacation anyway!  jj

I can understand that.  I probably get at least one or two requests for money for something a week and just stop writing when they ask.  The money wouldn't hurt me but I don't feel like wasting time on someone out to scam me.  I have done too much of that already.

Something else that you can do is to buy a good laptop from Ebay. Make sure that it is compatable for her use and then ship it or take it with you. I did just that once and I think in the long run I may have saved her, or me, a lot of Internet fees, not to mention the convience, and we were able to communicate more often too.

Elen, you just have not realized it yet. Your oil and gas exports will mean jobs, wages will rise, trading partners will continue to develop. Resources are sometimes a renewable thing and the amounts of them are vast. Timber and fisheries (especailly caviar) are renewable if managed properly. Oil and gas reserves are both vast and virtually untapped. Oil has become the must have resource. What is Iraq? What is Afghanistan? And if you say anything other than oil then I say you are very naive.

The US is moving closer toward a stronger trading ties with Russia. The two countries may soon be trading in nuclear products. All of this points to prosperity for the Russian people.

I realize rather well that since 80s my country is sitting on oil needle and I could be grateful for that like any nacotic addicted person is grateful for his drugs

Ps I told you jobs and good life oil and gas could provide was enough only for ~30% of population in Russia and even it could not be for enternity And as there is no big wish to develope here something else ( as oil money is too easy money and enouhgh for well being - on the west but not in Russia BTW- for those who rule the contry) I really can't get why I should be excited with a prospect to live in a country wich is leading to turn into materials-producing appendage of the West

As long as we're off topic Elen, I think as EU moves toward RU, there will be more economic advantages fabricating products in RU where probably cheaper wages and energy prices might be involved.  It will take a little time though for wages to equalize across the new EU countries.

Back on topic, If there was a woman I felt strong enough about where I felt the need to send money I'd be on the plane instead.

elen ~ What do you think you already have? The point is that as you guys get rapidly more wealthy(and whatever it might feel like it IS rapid) You wil have more toys to play with.

If 30% of your labourforce is directly/indirectly involved with extractive industry then you all benefitting. At the very least, 30% of the labourforce is not dependent upon social support and is not in poverty - this makes more for everyone else, even if none of the money earned from the extractive sector was never spent outside of it.

Development is a process, not a binary state. To get to a place one has to travel the road.

Cheaper wages is relative.. If RU expands production and export of manufactured goods more folks will be working and the economy will grow by leaps and bounds. Tight monetary controls can keep growth and inflation on track.  Look at Turkey as an example (where manny RU folks go to buy)  Wages are low there but the quality of life is quite good.  If / when Turkey joins EU many of the advantages will be lost over time when wages equalize.  Right now there seems to be a major construction boom.  I've never seen so many shopping malls, high rises, offices, hotels sprouting all over as I do there.  This might be a hedge for things to come.. what's already built can be worth quite a bit in the future.

Surely RU has the technology, education and skilled workforce to pull it off when conditions are right.

Interesting discussion but a good bit off topic.  Should we ask that these posts be moved to a new thread maybe?

I think we already have skew in oil derection economy wich would be fine only for a little part of population and that part would descend like shagren skin with time passes if things would develope like they are now.

Anyway it would be hard to win competion in cheap labour with billions of Chinas
