SUPERMOON !

Tonight we have a full moon at its perigee - closest approach to the Earth on its elliptical orbit  since January 26, 1948 - making it visually larger up to 14% in diameter and giving 30% more light than at its farthest point, the apogee.

This allows some spectacular photos to be taken tonight:

Wife and I went out for a walk to see the Supermoon. Mostly cloudy out where we live but had a few breaks. Was bright even when poking through the clouds. Fortunately a few days ago there were few clouds and it was the brightest night wife and I ever seen.

I am sort of confused.  A similar event happened maybe 10 years or so ago . . . and that moon was much, much larger than this moon.

So I dispute this 'closest since 1948' claim.

You are right, but it was more recent than that according to:

The most recent supermoon occurred on November 14, 2016, the closest to Earth since January 26, 1948, and the next one like this will not be until November 25, 2034

Thanks for sharing, Sandro ..I'm guessing this was as the Eclipse was ending - as it moved from left to right ?

An 'interesting' attempt - when leaving the aperture open a little TOO long .. ;)

Was your camera a bit wobbly ;D? They should have left a straighter track, as the stars did in the Maldive Islands - my camera on a tripod:

Sandro thank you for starting this thread.

For what it is worth I like the worm . . .

The day was my daughters wedding and even though there was music playing inside, most of us went outside to observe the moon setting over the Pacific.

The nights of 10-13 August are when we should see the Lacrime di San Lorenzo (St. Lawrence's tears), i.e. the stream of Perseid meteors that we call falling stars. Unfortunately, our night sky was clouded/overcast then and I could not see them, nor take pictures that would have looked like the star streaks I posted earlier.

I was trying to remember how long I had left the camera shutter open then, but could not after 25+ years ;). Then it occurred to me that it could be calculated approximately from the photo below.

There the streaks have an angular amplitude of about 5°. Since Earth rotates 360°/24 hours, i.e. 15°/hour, then 5°=20' :D.

many years ago, sleeping out under the stars, in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada, streaks across the dark night sky
fiery death at the end of a billion year journey
where there is no remembrance of former things
neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come
