newspaper ad
« on: August 19, 2008, 02:35:38 PM »
Thought I'd ask those that have tried this. If there is a thread on this that I missed please just point me in the right direction. Otherwise for those that have tried this. How well did it work? How would you word the ad? Tell me about your experiences in general so anyone like me considering this might know some things to expect.

I understand that the only responses I'd get would be from the city I would be placing the ad in so that is more narrow than going with some large agency.  What else am I missing or should know?
Reporter: Any comment on the bar incident where it was reported that you threw a man out a window?
Charles Barkley: My only regret was that the bar didn't have a second floor.

The Round Mound of Rebound was later acquitted on all criminal charges.

Here you go.  After trying the agency route I gave the ad a go in July.  You can find a true gem using the ads, but it is a numbers game.  I am putting together a TR, but Thor's post is the place to start.

The best times to run an ad are probably Sept.-Nov. and then Feb.-May.  You should try to be in country for at least 2 weeks to get the best out of the ad.  Mine ran a week before I arrived and a week while I was in Ukraine.  The responses were greater on Mondays.  Send me a PM if you want to know more.

this has been quite helpful.

Does anybody know of any websites where your ad can be placed for free? Russia, Ukraine?

the only website I've seen and really liked was sesile.com that focuses on bulgaria. Its not free but it I remember it being set up where the guy can post his profile and it was just like an american personals site. but i can't remember anyone saying they have tried it so who knows if its any good.

Probably the two best free personal sites are http://loveplanet.ru and http://love.online.ua , also known as http://flirt.com.ua.  They are both in Russian so setting up a profile is tricky.  I used my Abbyy Lingvo12 dictionary to naviagte the site plus Google elctronic translation for entering other information.  Most information is multiple choice.  There is no charge for members to write each other, including exchanging contact information.  A site in English is http://luckylovers.net.  It's free to set up a profile but $20/month to write to other members and read their e-mails to you.  You can also exchange contact information.  BTW, other than knowing the Russian alphabet, knowing some Russian words, and being able to read a little Russian, my Russian is very weak.  If I can set up a profile, most anyone can.

I ran a newspaper ad in a small city of 300K residents a couple of years ago.

I got about 40 responses.  I listed an email address in the ad.

There were a couple of gems in there, but many of them clearly missed the concept.  I'm not going to the FSU to look for an older, overweight, divorced woman with a teenager.  Wheat, chaff, wheat, chaff.
