Long lay over in Vienna! What to do?
« on: November 22, 2006, 04:08:43 PM »
Good news, I got multiple destination  tickets for Amsterdam and Odessa, Ukraine!  The bad news is my first flight day has a long layover.  My Arrival from Make Believe land (aka Washington DC) to Vienna is 9:00 am in the mornging.  My flight to Amsterdam isn't until 5:00pm.  So here is a lot of time in between.  It's a small airport and very easy for me to get bored in, despite having a little library in my carry on bag.  So, I'll probably pay for a 2 way at the Taxi counter and poke around in Der Prater for a good while. Then around 3pm in the afternoon, get in another taxi back to the airport.  All I have to do is go back through customs and wait for my next flight. I won't really spend any money in Austria except for taxi fare and food.  Just maybe I'll go on that giant ferriswheel again.

You could squeeze in a visit to the Hofburg :

Hofburg - Vienna's Imperial Palace
The Hofburg was originally a medieval castle, but today only the castle chapel ('Burgkapelle') demonstrates its medieval past.
The Hofburg was extended to a magnificent residence when the Habsburg's power increased. That's why one can find almost any architectural style, from gothic to art nouveau. Nowadays this enormous complex is home to "Österreichische Nationalbibliothek" (National Library), "Schatzkammer" (Imperial Treasury), and houses a collection of musical instruments, another collection of weapons, a "Museum für Völkerkunde" (Museum of Ethnography) and famous "Spanische Hofreitschule" (Spanish Riding School). Vienna's Imperial castle also houses exotic butterflies in a marvellous art-deco glass house!

You can take the metro to the city center, it's accessible from the airport and I think costs about 3 Euros. A taxi from airport to city center is about 75 euros.

I had an overnight layover in Vienna once. I was going to stay in the hotel near the airport but a beautiful girl from Kharkov on a K-1 talked me into going into going into the city. It was great. So much to see. I carried her little boy around on my shoulders most of the evening. We all had a great time. She married some guy from California I guess. I never heard another word from her although we exchanged addresses. I lost hers somewhere. She was goodlooking, but I was too in love to pay her much attention.LOL

When I'm coming back with the Mrs, we're going on Austrian air. On the way home, we're not staying overnight in Wien because we're leaving Odessa on a very early morning flight.  This was also my sneaky way of not having to spring for a transit visa for Austria.  As well, I just want to go home.

Trying not to be the one to point fingers, but I never understood how a guy can just wait for his sweet heart to come to him.  From the begining of the application process, I made it my own personal goal to go and bring her back myself.  As well, it's going to be nice to see it through her eyes.
