End of visas for US ctizens visiting Ukraine?
« on: April 06, 2005, 06:55:34 PM »
I had been hearing rumors concerning this for several weeks.  Yesterday a friend of mine who works at the US consulate in Kiev told me that Yushchenko was going to make an anouncement in regards to this during his visit to the US.

So far this is all I have read and it is far from being official.  It figures, I was just issued a 5 year multi entry visa yesterday.

quote  by Yushchenko before joint session of US Congress

Step seven, Ukraine has agreed to waive visa regime for the United States citizens.
(APPLAUSE)
I would request the U.S. government to, in the speediest possible manner, make reciprocal steps to help in relation to Ukrainian students, politicians and business people.

I would imagine it has to be signed into law first.

George Bush also makes a lot of promises as do all politicians.

If Yushchenko is going to waive the visa requirements for Americans, shouldn't English as a second language be initiated in the school system?

Parts of Europe are speaking English to a large extent (at least the young people have learned) such as Germany and the Netherlands.

Shouldn't Eastern Europe begin at some point in time?

I was under the impression that English and possibly German were two of the most widely taught second laguages in the FSU.

Well at the moment Russian is the second language in Ukraine....

Some people would be very happy to replace Russian with English.  Many would not!!

Honestly I hope this happens it would be great on so many levels and while it will not have any direct impact on our family as my wife and her family are Russian I see nothing but positive possibilities from such actions.

That said do not expect it to happen anytime soon, remember who we in the U.S. are dealing with, the department of Homeland Security and we thought the old INS was bad.

Where are all the English speaking people when I visit?

Conner, I didn't make myself clear until I saw Leslie's remark. Yes, I was referring to Ukraine based on Yushchenko's speech.

Maybe it is taught in schools but does not appear to be widely used as Russian or German.

Bruno,

Maybe this is why I hear of female translators "hitting on" their male clients.

Or maybe it is wishful thinking on the part of the men.
