Russian Roulette vs. African Roulette
« on: May 17, 2005, 01:24:40 PM »
An African leader makes an official trip to Russia. At the end of the trip, the Russian leader tells the African that in Russia they have a custom performed at farewells called "Russian Roulette" to demonstrate one's courage.

The Russian whips out a revolver, loads one chamber, gives the cylinder a spin, puts the gun to his head and pulls the trigger.

CLICK..   empty chamber.

He hands the revolver to his African guest, and says, "Your turn."  Not to be outdone, the African repeats the ritual .

CLICK . . . empty.

The next year, the Russian visits the African country. At the end of the trip, the African tells his Russian peer that he was very impressed with "Russian Roulette" and that he has spent the last year devising an African ritual to demonstrate one's courage.

The African then disappears through a door only to reappear a few minutes later smiling, and says, "Your turn."

The African escorts the Russian through the door. In the room are six  of the most beautiful, ***** women he has ever seen. The African explains that he is to pull down his ****, hold out his ***** and choose one of the women, who will give him a *******.

Absolutely dumbfounded, the Russian asks, "What kind of test of courage is this?"

The African calmly answers, "One of them is a cannibal."

Somehow I was expecting the punch line to include "One of the five has aids".

Don't know which way would be worse..... think I'll just leave Africa off my immediate travel plans.

My first thought too,

Africa = AIDS.

But then I wondered what the prevalence rate was in the FSU.  Here's what UNAIDS reports on the region:

Diverse HIV epidemics are underway in this region. The most serious and firmly-established epidemic is in Ukraine, which is experiencing a new surge of reported infections, while the Russian Federation is home to the largest epidemic in the entire region (indeed in all of Europe). However, HIV is unevenly distributed in Russia, with about 60% of all HIV infections to date having been reported in just 10 of the country’s 89 regions. There is considerable scope for further expansion of the epidemic in this vast countryâ€"alongside great opportunities to prevent such an outcome. Several Central Asian and Caucasian republics have entered the early stages of the epidemic, while in south-eastern Europe, HIV has acquired a tenuous presence amid behaviour patterns that favour significant spread of the virus.

I read a lot about the frequency of sex on the boards.  I've never read anyone talking about safe sex.

Something to consider if you don't want to play African roulette in Russia.

PLease correct me if I am wrong, but it seems almost everywhere else except Africa, (Sub sahara)  Aids is mainly in defined groups ie; homosexual, needle users, prostitutes. If you are not in this catagory your odds are pretty low of contact with the aids virus. In Africa, it is everywhere!!
All demographics are effected.
Why that is, I don't know.

The primary risk groups you listed are the very-high risk groups.  If you recall from the early days of HIV  pandemic, the risk groups were identified as the 4H's (homosexuals, hemophiliacs, herion users, and Hatians. This simplification proved to be untrue and dangerous, and allowed the disease to move into the heterosexual population before effective wide-spread prevention programs were implemented. Unfortunately what happens is that HIV moves into the general population as a sexually transmitted disease which then places anyone not practicing safe sex at risk. Africa is frequently cited as the continent of high risk, however HIV/AIDS is exploding in China, India and eastern Europe.

Below is a further excerpt from the UNAIDS web site that follows the excerpt from my previous posting.

Amid such diversity, four features stand out (I listed the first three). On the whole, most of the epidemics in this region are still in their early stages which means that timely, effective interventions can halt and reverse them. Secondly, the vast majority of people living with HIV in this region are young; more than 80% of the reported infections are being found among people below the age of 30 years (by comparison, in Western Europe some 30% of people with HIV fall in that age group). Thirdly, sexual transmission of HIV is increasing in each of the most seriously-affected countries an indication that the epidemic has gained a foothold in the wider population.  [/color]

HIV is a disease that can affect anyone at anytime in any place. There are no safe countries left in the world.

Better safe than sorry.

AIDS is a difficult disease to catch among healthy heterosexual people. That is unless they practice anal sex. It is the anal sex which cause bleeding that is the primary way AIDS is transmitted sexually. Blood contact is the primary carrier of the disease. Homosexuals practice anal sex hence the reason why they are much more affected that heterosexuals.

Areas of the world in which there is a high percentage of AIDS with heterosexuals are areas where many people have run down immune systems. The combination of poor diet and sickness from tropical diseases, malaria as example, weakens the immune system and makes the possibility of catching the disease from vaginal/oral sex a much higher probability. In addition to this incest with anal sex as a protection from pregnancy also more rapidly spreads this disease. Yes incest is more rampent among certain cultures and certain parts of the world.

Yes AIDS can be acquired among heterosexuals practicing non anal sex. But that fact possibility does not mean it will become a pandemic among these people. AIDS activists looking for additional government funding would like us to believe this but it is for their own benefit. This disease has been known for about 25 years and has not affecting large percentages of heterosexual people in developed and healthy countries.

As Gay rights groups will point out AIDS is not caught by casual contact. They are not totally truthful or forthcoming about how AIDS is caught in their community by blood to blood and blood to semen exchange.
