Traveling Back to Ukraine
« on: June 01, 2007, 01:24:57 AM »
Hey All,

My wife and step-daughter are planning to travel back to Ukraine for several weeks this month to visit relatives -
I am not sure of the travel documents they will need to leave and enter the US and Ukraine -
We were married last summer and Tanya (my wife) and Sasha (my step-daughter) both have their green cards (issued in Febuary this year) and Tanya has a Ukrainian passport and they traveled to the US last summer with a K-1 and k-2 visa.
Can someone give me some advice on what I need to be doing for their travel documents?

Thanks,

Paul Doolittle

Hey Paul!

You can read about it here:

How are things going for you all? Good to see the GC's came through for you.

Please be aware that you will need an certificate signed and notarized by your wife's ex (unless he is dead or she was granted sole custody) to leave Ukraine with your step-daughter via Borispol.

This fact slipped my wife's mind until the couple going through passport control in front of her got turned away for not having one. LUCKILY, the scene caused by the unlucky couple must have distracted the lady checking paperwork and she failed to notice that Dasha's certificate was over two years old and they skated that time.

I'm sure that she will get another one this year before they try to leave and I'm certain that this was one of the factors in her wanting to get her citizenship so that she would never have the need to depend on the ex for anything ever again.

BTW it's a real PITA to get one of these as both parents must go down to the government office that issues these and spend quality time together, ie. several hours waiting to be served...

If you need to know which office/department to go to I will ask my wife.

If the step daughter is 16 years or older, she will not need the ex's permission to leave Ukraine. Or if she is younger and documents have expired, exit through Moscow as an option.

I'm not sure that the "exit through Moscow" loophole is still available. It is my understanding that the law was changed two years ago as to how "passport control" works at Borispol. I don't know if it is as ridgidly applied at other airports or bordercrossings. Shades of the Iron Curtain...
