Cingular SMS....
« on: July 29, 2007, 11:10:09 AM »
I have Cingular mobile number, my girlfriend in Ukraine has internet connection at home!
I wen to cingular.com web site and I see no option for sending SMS.
How can she send me SMS? The best way?

I have a laptop I always take to Ukraine and my trips, I want to buy her a laptop, will have any problems if I take both laptops in my carryon luggage on the airplane? Passengers can take only laptop with them, Is there a limit?

Thanks

Mike, I don't know about the SMS with cingular.....I would buy her a lap top where she lives because of the voltage difference....computers are about the same price there, and they have name brands..

I thought most laptops have the power supply external, and that they are designed to work with different voltages. I know my Dell laptop works fine overseas. Just needs an adaptor for the plug. Trying to get 2 laptops through customs may raise a few looks and a few questions but I doubt much you will be stopped, unless of course you still have it in it's original packaging.

wxman, yes mine works also....the adaptors that we bring are not made for long term use and each time we use them...we are playing Russian Roulette with an automatic pistol ;)   I would think that the computer manufacturer's for Ukraine/Russia, would have a better supply cord backup for the voltage difference vs for use in U.S. :noidea:   Plus he would not have to hassle with two computers.....plus his Girl friend might not like the color he picked out ;D

Wayne,

Good points. Plus she may also know what she needs in a computer as far as software, etc.  She could easily check out the laptops in her city, find what best suits her needs, and find a good price ahead of time.

The other problem with bringing her a laptop is that Windows, Word, etc will be in English, instead of Russian which can be a problem if she is trying to navigate through instructions or if she needs the help of a computer guy there to fix a problem.

When I was in the Ukraine in may I priced out laptops, and happened to have just bought a new one in the states 2 weeks ago.

I would suggest you purchase hers in the Ukraine. No price difference plus it will be set up for both english and russian, also it will have the extra Russian letters on the key board.

I agree with the guys above... buying electronics (Computers, televisions, etc) is a similar price to at home (actually PC's are cheaper than in Oz).

As for taking 2 notebooks into Ukraine, I did it...  ;) ... and I only left with one!  I put that down to luck though and not anything I did to avoid being checked at customs...

Yes, she can communicate with your cingular cell phone and your computer from Ukraine to the USA.  Marina and I did so for a year before she came to the US.   I had Cingular; she had UMC.

She can send you a text message to your cell phone by entering +1(area code)(phone number)  example:  +14561212222

From UMC, she can also send you an SMS email from her phone:  (your emal address, space text massage and than send it to service UMC number 1010 (kievstar has service number 555)   example joe.blow@hiya.com I miss you!     and send to 1010.

PM me if you need more instructions...good luck!
