Connection Problems
« on: August 31, 2007, 08:02:16 AM »
I live in the States, my lady lives in Ukraine.  I have recently been trying to call her using Tel3.  The problem is, when she answers, I can hear her but she can't hear me.  Then it disconnects us.  I know she doesn't hang up because I can see her on the webcam trying to talk to me.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  By the way, I am using my cell and calling her on her cell.  Don't know if this causes problems or not

Firstly: Welcome to RWD fanparty!

Is this webcam in her flat? If so why don't you both just get Skype and you can do away with the cell phones.

We often have that problem with Elena calling her family at home. It's worse on the cells but it happens on both cell and land lines.

Thanks for the quick reply Ken.  No, the webcam is not in her flat.  She doesn't have internet at home.  The webcam is through the agency.

How about calling their office while she is there? We have Vonage broadband phone and it never costs us more than $50 a month (for two lines) and that is many hours of calls to Omsk, Russia. You can also get Skype to call from your computer to land lines but I do not have Skype so have no experience with it.

Good Luck!

Ken

P. S. Would be cool if you told us a bit of your story in the Introduction section.

I have SKYPE on my PC and have used it to call my fiancee's Ukraine mobile phone. The calls are really loud and clear. You can use a mic and speakers, but for calling a mobile I would get a headset to eliminate room noises. The cost per minute is not cheap at $0.18 per minute. It's not any cheaper than Vonage and both work well calling Ukraine. Hopefully in the future the price will come down as it has for Russia and a few other FSU countries.

I call my wife on her cell phone in Ukraine pretty much every day.  I use Yahoo Messenger's phone out service through my computer.  It runs me $.17 a minute.  Overall the voice quality on both sides is excellent.  Occasionally we lose one voice or the other, the voice quality is poor or a call gets dropped, but I just call back and it's fine again.

My wife calls her family on a regular basis and we found one service that works very well for northern Russia: jajah.com. I found the quality is exceptional and it is even cheaper than Skype. [Disclaimer: I am in now way affiliated with this company, nor do I get any benefits from this, I am just passing on what I found after years of searching for a good product to call Russia.]

Try Skype! If she calls you from Ukraine you won't pay much and the connection is ok.

Best wishes.
