Does she live in the US?  If so, at least $20 to 25 an hour considering that's the average salary of a teacher in the US is $45,000 a year.

I pay $20 usd an hour for a teacher in person in Milwaukee.

When I travel, I have a teacher I pay $20  / 25 usd an hour depending if you pay for more classes upfront.  This teacher is based in St. Louis and calls you.  Also supplies all class materials.

In Kiev its $5 usd an hour.

I'd think that $15-$20 cash would be fair. $20 cash would be $25 up if it were taxed.
Talk it over and see what they charge.

2tall,  you're in the Bay area, right? Here's a gal (a grad I think - not a native speaker
but I could be wrong) who's advertising her services...

Edit - I'm apparently wrong about her - and with a name like Titova, 2tall,
she might be right up your alley!

If your teacher from Ukraine is Bay area based, my guess is that
$25-30/hr would be fair - for her time and expertise, and for your
personal benefit. It also strikes me that you could probably knock
out a basic Russian course at any of several local community colleges
and then take on the private tutor for more intermediate training.

I actually got paid to learn it, courtesy of the USAF long ago. If someone
back then told me I'd have a Russian spouse in the future I would've considered him crackers.

Sorry not enough information.

No she lives in Ukraine (not in Kiev) and we can communicate by yahoo messenger.
What would be a fair rate of pay for her living there?
I agree bay area wages would be considerably higher.

I do not know about Ukraine , but in Moscow it would be 350-450 roubles depends on how qualified is the teacher, cos there are many students who start teaching people and they charge like 250-350 roubles

I think if she is going to teach you over yahoo messenger you'd better download the russian courses there are plenty of them in the internet either for free or for some amout of money and learn it on your own ,like my husband is doing he learnt many russian words like that, of course I help him all the time, but he finds it easy to listen to one lesson per day  and learn russian words  and then amaze me :) that is a very good thing

May I ask? How do you know he is be ripped off? Do you expect a professional teacher to do provide their services for free?  Blanket statements do not add any value.

wxman: his question contained the answer.   ANYONE WHO TEACHES YOU RUSSIAN OVER INSTANT CHAT IS TRYING TO RIP YOU OFF BECAUSE THAT IS A HORRIBLE WAY TO LEARN A LANGUAGE, AND ANY PROFESSOR OR CREDIBLE TEACHER AS THEY CLAIMED TO BE WOULD KNOW THAT.

but that wasn't lost on you was it......

Wow, and I suppose distant learning is also crap. Plenty of rural schools doing this and the children are just as well educated as the rest. You get out of it, what you put into it. One doesn't need someone standing right in front of you to learn.  But I guess that's beyond your ability to understand.

if i did not know that he was pursuing a bad learning pedagogy, i would have had the sense to not say something.  that way i would be helping him by not telling him to spend money this way.  but it's good you thought about it again wxman, maybe you can spend your money learning a foreign language for $20 per hour over instant messenger chat like he was proposing.

maybe i should just speak like this. jane saw spot. spot is a dog. in north dakota where wxman lives they don't have language teachers.

Bill:

The cost of lessons isn't so much of an issue as to whether or not you can learn from a person.  Just because someone is a native speaker of a language doesn't necessarily mean that they can communicate information to you in a way that you can understand.

What's more important than price is if you have a teacher who can work with your particular learning style, whatever that may be. If you can find a person like that then they are worth their weight in caviar (the good kind, not the cheap stuff). ;D

Too many 'teachers' I know are wedded to a specific type of teaching... esp if they studied in the FSU.  The old Soviet education system wasn't much on flexibility.  They fed it to you and you either learned it or you didn't.

From what I recall when we met you had a pretty good grasp on the basics and had no problems going up and speaking to anyone.  In what area are you looking to improve?  Grammar?  Vocabulary? Eliciting epic toasts at Russian-speaking functions?  Perhaps all you need is to listen to more Russian.  Lots of Russian-language radio online and endless amounts of study material.  Google is a wonderful thing.

Ultimately it's not about the cost, it's about what you get out of it.

удачи!

Don't worry about avoiding temptation. . as you grow older, it will avoid you.-- Winston Churchill

I know an Russian language teacher from Ukraine. She wants to charge me a fair price to teach Russian to me

What is a fair price?

Per hour?

Thank you,

Bill

The fair price will the fact that right from the start you will be able to listen to her speak the language from the alphabet to short sentences to longer dialogue exchanges.  The ability to understand the spoken language is always the most difficult aspect of language acquisition, and with her right there this can be corrected and mastered more readily.
