Dan

I'm wondering what broadcaster went down there ?  CBC , CTV, Global ,WTN ?  Or is it a independent production company ?  The way they are making this leads me to believe it's not going to be on W5 or the fifth estate. Two of the longest running news documentry shows airing in Canada.

At any rate I'm sure it was loaded with Canadian tax credits, funding in part by me. :(
I too hope for the best, and I'm sure it won't be as pathetic as the Tyra
"I bought my bride"  show.

I met a woman in Kharkov who says that she was interviewed by this television crew. She told me that it was CTV. She was curious as to how I had heard of the project and I told her I had learned of it from this list. She is also anxious to know when it will be broadcast.

So if it is CTV, then it will probably be on W5 as it is the only documentary style news show that isn't political in nature. W5 is an hour long show that airs early Saturday evenings. Their shows are available on the internet after airing. If it is W5 it would not be their first trip to Ukraine. They did a very nice documentary on a Canadian lady who provides a summer camping experience to Ukrainian orphans.

The typical agenda for this show is to expose fraudsters, or provide a platform for those who have been wronged by some injustice. My belief is that it is usually fair at showing both sides to a story but sometimes has shown a bias when it airs a show that will get major public support.

This week show, November 3, will give some air time to the subject of on-line dating but it doesn't appear to be the subject for the whole hour. http://www.ctv.ca/wfive
But if this is the show that airs the visit to Kharkov then I am betting that it will not be a positive light as the trailers mention predators and cyber sharks.

Hmm, well I hope that is not the one, and it doesn't sound like it.  The TV crew was pretty clear with those of us who participated that the show would focus on those interviewed in Denver and via the 2 guys who were followed to Ukraine...they sent us some clips of their previous programs, and they tend to explore the "human perspective" from various sides rather than on exposes or sensationalism.

We'll see!

    Jen,

I hope that you are right. The CTV National News had a preview on Fridays late news of the upcoming W5 story and it has an IMBRA feel to it. The dating sites it showed were what would be considered local introduction sites. They interviewed a Representative from Florida so at least part of the story has a U.S. link.

The preview can be viewed on the CTV website. Scroll down a bit to where it has CTV News:Nov. 2, 2007. The video will open in a new window. You will not have to watch the whole 1/2 hour as it has a link on the right to the story. It is called Surfing For Love. There may be a short story about a Nasa spacewalk before the dating story.

From the CTV website:

Mail-order brides face exploitation: study
Updated Sun. Oct. 8 2006 11:27 PM ET

Canadian Press

VANCOUVER -- Nika thought her future was bright when she came to Canada from the Philippines as a bride to the owner of a booming taxi business.

She was following in the footsteps of her sister, Nela, who had herself immigrated as a mail-order bride and was living comfortably with her husband and two young children.

But soon after Nika arrived thanks to the sponsorship of her husband Tom, things began to fall apart. For one, she learned she was his fifth wife.

He beat her, restricted her right to use the phone, stopped sending money to her family and even controlled her diet.

Nika fled to a transition house after a month.

A new study by Simon Fraser University's Jen Marchbank says the scenario is not unique. Mail-order brides coming to Canada have little knowledge of their rights and face exploitation at the hands of unscrupulous husbands.

And the business in Canada is thriving, thanks in part to the Internet.

The day an unbiased TV crew produces something positive about Russian ladies or the men who pursue them.

I just finished watching the segment. This is the link that describes the story: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20071102/WFIVE_risky_business/20071102?hub=WFive.

It features two "cyber sharks": the first a male scammer that ripped off women in Canada out of thousands of dollars and the second a real sadist and control freak who would find his victims online on dating sites. Then the segment examined if the agencies such as lavalife are doing enough to protect their clients and warning them of potential dangers.

Note this quote from Jen...

"It is a commodification of women," Marchbank said, "This is about women as a commodity to be purchased. This is to me very much about international inequalities in economics."

Hey Guys,

Relax a bit.

First, look at the byline date on that piece - it is more than a year ago.

Next, it appears there is an odd coincidence that two ladies who's first names start with 'Jen' participated in the 2006 TV piece - as well as the 2007 piece here in Denver. I do not believe they are the same 'Jen'.

I spoke with the producer a short time back, and I understand they have not yet finished assembling the piece for release.

Still have to wait and see.

- Dan

Yes, I realize it could be a different Jen.

But that quote was so offensive to our wives that it needed to be pulled from the article and shared here.

No matter which Jen said it.

"It is a commodification of women," Marchbank said, "This is about women as a commodity to be purchased."

Hi all,

Sorry I have been out of the loop for a few weeks. But yes, to reiterate Dan's point, Marchbank is not me.  I hate to put my real last name up extra times to be searched out on the internet, but if you recall there was a good deal of discussion when I first arrived here, including attention to some of my scholarly work and background -- you can easily find the details if you wish. Also, for what it's worth, I wouldn't have given that quote.

take care, j.
