Marriage and wedding in different states
« on: April 26, 2009, 05:02:46 PM »
For family scheduling (and K-1 requirement) purposes, I'm considering having our marriage in CA and the wedding a few months later in MI.  Are there any laws that prohibit the marriage and wedding in different states?

No.

Marriage is where you are making your union legal. It is also where you will receive marriage license.

Wedding is just a ceremony. As long as you are not trying to get another license from another state you are fine. You  can have as many weddings as you wish.

I am fairly sure you could get married, I.E. create a document in all states with no problem. It is only not legal to get married to multiple people not one person multiple times.  But in your case, I assume what you are calling a wedding only a ceremony. In most states, (not all, in Texas a verbal promise can consist of a legal marriage) so why would there be any problem?

Also I assume you are considering this just because of the difficulty to put a large wedding together in the time frame of a K-1. I assure you it can be done. We put ours together in about 5 weeks total time, and the wedding was in Iowa and we live were and are living in Dallas for about 160 people attending. (Thank God for sisters) .

Also think strongly about how the wedding will not exactly be the real thing. And how it will not be emotionally the same because you are already married.

Hello Sideskraft.

Sounds like the "Big" day is coming up soon!  :)

Congratulations.

You can have several wedding ceremonies in different states (if you can afford it!!).

I had a couple of friends of mine who got married here in Florida, flew to Hawaii and had their wedding ceremonies there.

Think of it like "renewing" your vows. You can do the ceremony as many times as you want, any place you want.

Good Luck!

Thanks guys for your suggestions and well wishes!  It looks like we'll get married in Santa Barbara CA and then have a small ceremony here in MI early August for friends and other family.  I'll post again as things move forward.

Congratulations on the big day coming up! I am sure both you and your bride will enjoy and cherish the memories from both ceremonies.  :flowers:
