oh, gosh. There's a tavern in the next town or so over the bridge going south. I forget it. Little real touristy town with one mainstreet. Russian food, though, is meat and potatos.

Why? I decided today that there is no Russian food that I like. I then began to wonder how quicking my lady could learn to cook French. Or I am going to glue her to my mom for the first month and get her Americanized in the kitchen asap. The Coke and Sprite here in Russia ever tastes odd. I drink the beer.

Have you eaten at the Yelkie Pelkie yet?  It's one of the better traditional Russian resturants located at the head of the Old Arbat Street.

There are tasty Russian dishes, however eating them on a regular basis will clog your arteries very quickly.  Meats are fried in butter and then simmered in smetana (sour cream) until tender.  Good stuff.  If you don't have, or haven't acquired a taste for caviar or ikra, you are missing a true Russian eating experience.  Try the blini, a small light pancake served with melted butter, sour cream, garnished with red caviar for a delicious breakfast.

P.S. It took me awhile before I was able to choke down the pickled codfish livers that so many Russian men love to snack on while drinking vodka with their buddies, but I'm cool with that now.

peewee,

One of the problems most AM have when they go to Russia is that they are constantly in the company of RWs, while that's not a bad thing in and of itself, they mostly experience what I call "girlie food".  In order to truely experience Russia, a man needs to make some Russian men friends.

Russian men are a very neglected national treasure. When you get to know them, and they open up to you as a friend, you might get some real Russian men's food.  When Russian men get together, there is always vodka, I don't know why, but 3 bottles always seem to be the correct number.  Food is always on the table as they drink.  In more modest circles it might be as simple as slices of bread, tomatoes, and cucumbers.  More often there will be a selection of cheeses, salads, meats, pickled or salted fish, ikra (caviar) and other salted snacks.

It's an experience everyone should have at least once.

There's also a great Georgian cafe a block from the big church, (monastery?, large onion domes by the Moscow river) where they serve food from the Caucasus region of Russia.  I don't remember the name, but it is easy to spot because of the large outdoor eating area.  The food is a bit spicier than typical Russian food, and the Georgian wines are worth the trip.

Do not bother to order a white table wine in Russia, as far as Russians are concerned, white wine is for cooking.

While in Moscow, you should go to the "Garage" at least one night, but you will need to find a place to park peewee jr. for the evening.  You will have no trouble finding the place, there's half of a '57 Ford T-Bird sticking out above the front door, and all the cabbies know where it is.  This is an upscale night club where you will see some of the most beautiful girls in the world on any given Friday/Saturday nights.

Enjoy.

Too funny, jb!  Of course the RW want to eat anything but Russian food too!  In Moscow we ate at a Tex-Mex place (Lena's first cassadia) at the Americanski Grill (Lena's first Denver omelette) at Patio Pizza and at the Mariott's Polo Lounge (Lena's first whole lobster).
