My wife was similarly 'shocked' to discover how 'true' some of her friends really were.  Fortunately there were a few that share her pleasure in being able to establish a stable home and family outside RU.

Frequent visits back home were quite essential to her acclimatization here.  After the third trip in little over two years she called and said 'I wanna back home'.  Guys that have received this call will know the 'rush' of relief that ensues.

btw I never put a limit on the frequency or length of her trips 'home'.  I think this was helpful.  Now, after five years we are talking every two years for shorter stays of 30 days or so and her parents visiting us here on the odd years.  As you can tell, travel is a big part of the budget here.  Beware ye seeker.

Very true. This Christmas trip to Ukraine set us back $5,000 and counting.

Plus, with the accident she had there, no telling how much the tab will be.

Seekers beware...

Yes, the increased cost due to Marina's accident are indeed unfortunate, but as to the ultimate value of following up as a true gentleman, pennies on the dollar or even much less.

Yeah, she was REALLY happy I flew to be with her.

To her, and me, it was priceless.

The truth is that fsu girls get double culture shock.

Here, and then there, when they return home.

Simoni, this is true for all immigrants. I just come back from new year with her, we have talked a lot about life in Canada, we are virtually engaged (no formal question but our wishes are the same). I have moved from France to Canada when I was 23. Despite same language in Quebec, here people are North American speaking french, not french living in North America.

We talked together about the difficulties to have friends outside the immigrant community's, and the shock when you come back in your birth country. I feel no more French, and I don't feel yet Canadian. I know that my own experience will help her when we will live under the same roof.

The more difficult is not from visible differences but is all social rules, not written that define relation between people.

When you move to another country, there is always a phase of deception and nostalgia.

I think thats the best concise summery of culture shock I've ever read! Spot on, docetae
