To those who travel to UKR.

So, my first post in the Experienced section... I have found some good information. If you have a Garmin GPSMap handheld, I-Go software on a windows mobile handheld or a laptop computer with MapSource, you can get full street level maps of most major cities and all highways in the Ukraine! I think I'll be getting this for my trip this spring, since i have a GPSMAP 60CSx with a 512Mb miniSD. I'll just load the whole mess of maps on there, and it should give me turn by turn directions almost anywhere.

Check it out: http://www.gpsmap.com.ua/en/index.htm

Mods, you can sticky this if you feel it is worthwhile information. I've been an avid GPS user for some time, and was not too thrilled that I couldn't find maps pf the UKR, and when Taz mentioned to me how poor the map data was that he had on his GPS, I decided to search a bit more, and found this.

Cool, I am sure it will be invaluable for those who travel there and choose to drive around themselves.

I will most certainly write up a review of it when I get back from the UKR later this year. Trip number two.. yay!
All night... its check, check, check!

Teddy- This is the company I used. I didn't post a link to it earlier because I personally wouldn't recommend it to anyone yet. I've been writing a complete list of errata regarding the maps and routing choices.

I have a major issue with their transliteration as I've mentioned in my posts regarding JD's saga. I wish you'd PM'd me before buying it. Maybe by version 5.0 it would be truly useful. They REALLY need to improve the maps in a lot of cities. If you are in Kyiv or Kharkiv, they aren't too bad but when you only have one major highway listed going through towns like Mariupol, you have issues.

As I mentioned in some other posts, the routes chose often leave something to be desired. Also you need to check the current laws regarding GPS usage in any foreign country as well. Some are very strict about GPS usage by foreigners. Last I checked, Ukraine was more "relaxed" about this than Russia but always check current rules. I just use mine as discretely as possible.

Also try and add your waypoints before you go. Many of these mapping programs have a few issues with naming conventions, duplicate names, etc. so figure it out in advance as much as possible with a "normal" map at your disposal.
Take time to learn the language. Even a little can go a long ways...

Get off your butt and go! Don't make excuses why you can't do it, find a way to make it work! Always go with a backup plan too!!!
