Next, here is the description of the scoring algorithm:

WowBB uses an advanced iterative algorithm to determine the most respected users. A user "adds mana" to other users she respects, and the more mana she has, the more the increase in recipients' manas. A user can also change her mind, and remove mana from someone to whom she added mana before. However, the more members a member adds mana to, the less the effect of those mana additions.

For example, let's assume that your mana is 3 out of 4. If you want to add mana to someone then you basically add him/her 3 points divided by the number of members to whom you added mana before. If you added mana to one member before, the amount of mana you would add is 3/(1+1)=1.5 points. This is a dynamic process. Whenever someone adds or removes mana, the manas of all members are calculated from scratch.

Finally, mana takes the normal distribution rule into account, and it gets increasingly accurate as you get more members.

I think that the best I can figure is that true mana value will only become apparent with enough use.  For instance, a poster with zero posts can give mana to lots of folks, but that won't carry much weight because the member has no mana/posts of his/her own.  However, early on, no one has posts or mana, so the weight increases temporarily (two posters with zero posts give each other mana on a forum where there has been no mana xchange or posting will give a premium value to the mana).  As the forum matures, the value of posts and mana falls more into line (a poster with 100 posts and 2.5 mana has real weight when giving mana I think, whereas now the zero post/zero mana poster will have only a tiny effect by giving mana).

Yes, that is correct. We use z scores with a mean of zero and a standard deviation of one (range: -4 to 4). Each full mana "gem" corresponds to two standard deviations; half full gems (one standard deviation) are also possible.

Note: In order for mana to be accurate, there must be quite a few mana exchanges between members.

A person with more respect, has more respect to give....

Basically, what it is saying is that a person who is respected by more people, has an opinion that is of higher value, therefore when they give respect points they are worth more.

To counter that, if someone who nobody respects gives mana to people, their opinion is obviously of less value, so their respect is of less value.

It is complicated mathimatically, but it works. Mana should be used sparingly.... the more you give the less you have, and its value is less since it is spread out so thin.

OK y'all - that should give you PLENTY to mull over as you consider how to drive up those scores :dude:

And just so you know, I have done NOTHING to influence the scores - my own included. Candidly, after reading this, I am not sure HOW to influence the scoring :?

Mana seems to be directly proportionate to the number of posts a member has made.
