Brain teaser
« on: February 18, 2008, 08:24:18 PM »
Somebody sent this to me by e-mail and I found it fascinating

The question is simple, which direction is the woman spinning, clockwise or counterclockwise?

After a few replies I'll post what the answers mean  ;)

Same here,   maybe that is the real fascination trying to find the woman.   I think you may need to repost it Jet.

If you look long enough at the heels of the woman, she will turn in whatever direction you want  :P

WOW Bluebell I'm impressed! (I also was able to get her to spin both ways with some concentration)

If you see this lady turning in clockwise you are using your right brain.
If  you see it the other way, you are using left brain.
Some people do see both ways, but most people see it only one way.

See if you can make her go one way and then the other by shifting the brain's current.
BOTH DIRECTIONS CAN BE SEEN

Experimentation has shown that the two different sides, or hemispheres, of the brain are responsible for different manners of thinking. The following table illustrates the differences between left-brain and right-brain thinking:
Left BrainRight Brain
LogicalRandom
SequentialIntuitive
RationalHolistic
AnalyticalSynthesizing
ObjectiveSubjective

Most individuals have a distinct preference for one of these styles of thinking. Some, however, are more whole-brained and equally adept at both modes. In general, schools tend to favor left-brain modes of thinking, while downplaying the right-brain ones. Left-brain scholastic subjects focus on logical thinking, analysis, and accuracy. Right brained subjects, on the other hand, focus on aesthetics, feeling, and creativity.

Interesting, I haven't seen this one before.

I have great difficulty getting her to stop switching back and forth (as with most illusions of this type).  That probably fits - I am pretty close to 50/50 right brain/left brain (I have a scientific background and a bent for creative writing).  I've had much longer tests give the same result as this one!

I just have her standing still like she stepped in doggie do.  I can't get her to go either way.   Is that a sign of confused brain or no brain?

Clockwise for me no matter how I try to look at her or concentrate as Bluebell suggested.

Turbo, you just married an RW. Your brain may be a bit fried. Come back to this in a few months.  ;D

Here you can find more visual illusions:

I like the one where you have to stare at black dots, then you will see an image in a light circle.

Viking, you have to look at the foot the moment it touches the ground, after a couple of seconds it turns. For me starts with counterclockwise, then turns to clockwise and from this is more difficult to turn it back counterclockwise.

Turbo, maybe you should click on the picture once?  :D

No brain or fried brain seems to be the answer.  If my brain was there or not fried I would have thought to click on it.   I had her going both ways but can't seem to do anything but clockwise most of the time,  VWRW sees clockwise as well.  Pretty cool.

You could also add to that list:
Male-Feminine ;)
Western-Far Eastern

Many Oriental meditation techniques aim at involving more the right hemisphere, Yoga through a gradual process (concentration-meditation-contemplation), Zen Buddhism through a typically-Japanese violent process (the koan, a proposition that has NO rational answer).

I am overwhelmingly left-brained and this also means that I am very bad at drawing. Years ago I stumbled upon a book called Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (1979) by Betty Edwards (then a teacher at ULB, Cal.) which contained a novel approach to learn how to draw. One of her first exercises involved copying the attachment (Pablo Picasso's portrait of Igor Strawinski, 1920) presented upside down.

If you do that, you're not really worrying about the end result but are forced to concentrate on its structure (angles of lines, relative proportions, etc.). When I finally turned my sketch upside down, I was surprised to see that I had reproduced the original rather decently :o.

I can only see the girl spinning clockwise, however ;D.

Bluebell, your link includes a drawing ("Fish") by a Dutchman I'm sure you'll know, M.C. Escher, whose work was almost entirely devoted to optical illusions ;).

It doesn't surprise me that I'm right brained even though I am not artistic.

I tested out ENFP with 95% N and 90% P.

Doesn't matter which way you turn her in the vertical plane, she still has nice.....................and nice...............and nice............. Does anything else matter? :-\ :-\ Now if we could see her in the horizontal plane, then that would be a teaser. :o :o
