A new citizen

 As of 11:00 am eastern on Friday the 14th,in Lexington ,KY my wife is a citizen of the USA.      She left Kazakhstan on an exit visa and couldn't visit as they wouldn't allow her to leave if she returned.    She will finally be able to visit Almaty on a US passport.
    She hasn't seen any of her family since arriving here June of 2005.

           She was a bit disappointed that it took so long that she couldn't vote.

Congratulations on your wife's new citizenship. It will be great for her that she will be able to visit her family again. Frankly it seems fast her getting citizenship in 3 years as I understood it takes 3 years from the time she get her legal permanent residency card and those usually take between 2 to 3 years to get (The conditional green card is 2 years in length).

          Maxx , We did a DCF and were married in Almaty in feb 2005. So,got her 10 year card last year. IIRC.   Being married to an American citizen allows her to naturalize after 3 years.   I didn't do the paper work for this ,she prefered to do it herself. So,I'm not really up on all the requirements.   But.I can say it happened as fast as was possible for it to happen

           She is quite excited.  especially to see her father ,he suffers from Alzheimers and we are afraid he may not remember her.     She also looks forward to visiting her best friend.   She has clothes,a bicycle and about a 100 pounds of other stuff to take over for her friend and her family.   I'll need the truck to get it to the airport and the airline will need another plane to haul it all.   Just the Russian way she tells me.

Maxx, her status as a perminant resident starts with the conditional green card not the 10 year one.   Three years after the date on her conditional green card she is eligible for citizenship as long as she has been continuously married to an American citizen.  She is allowed to apply 45 days before that anniversary so the application can go in ahead of that three year mark.

There seems to be some confusion on this issue but I am 100% positive I am right on this.  Actually I got into a discussion with jb elsewhere on this.  He had misunderstood the wording and waited two years longer than he needed to.  Arguing with jb is like arguing with a wall.  I spent a ton of time researching this and provided link after link to prove my side of it but jb is jb and will never admit he is wrong. (not that I was asking him to admit it)
