What did your wife take home?
« on: November 17, 2008, 05:54:19 PM »
Hey guys,
Nata is starting to figure out when she is going to visit Odessa in the spring, and Mama has already started putting in requests.
Among the biggest hits from past visits have been honey, dried cranberries, vitamins and Snickers for her sisiter.

What items have your inlaws requested----other than more time home for their daughter?
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

Beef jerky, peanut butter and the "Green Medicine" - Nyquil.

My brother-in-law is wild about Peter Pan Crunchy, although
it's the only brand he's sampled. It is also understood that
traveling West, vodka travels too. Going East it's barrel-aged
bourbon whiskey and tequila.

"Hits" with the kids are those socks with the little toes...
apparently they are unavailable where my wife is from.
And the candy called Pop Rocks.

Don't forget the Salsa!!  Real doughnuts like the police eat (LMAO) - that's rich. I guess the age-old perception of things American really isn't so far off the mark....
... lemme get a half dozen lemon glazed and shrink-wrapped, please.

On my first journey, I was asked if I'd ever been to Golly-VOOOOD. It took me a moment to
realize my sister-in-law was saying "Hollywood"....Nope, never been there. There was some
fascination with Elvis and Marilyn, so I brought over a couple of those coffee table books on
Journey Two.

My mother-in-law loves cream cheese. Nearly impossible to keep fresh on the 36 hour trek, so
I googled the recipe for her. Not so easy to make at home...

Doll, instead of shooting down suggestions - why not state a few positive ideas? Your input could
be of value here - while your defensiveness is quite transparent.

Maple syrup, Kahlua, multi-tools, cowboy hats (we had to special order one and send it recently and now have requests for more), and American/Canadian cigarettes are always good items.

For us it's Rum and Oreos going East and Vodka/Cigerettes heading West.
Other common requests are Pepperidge Farm Piruettes (in the tin can) Maxwell house filter-pack singles, dietetic candy & cookies for Grandmother, and zip-lock bags.
Rum is far and away the most requested, so she's usually lugging @ 6 bottles.
On average $200 to $300 is budgeted for gifts for family/friends

I got one of the shake flashlights at Academy sports.  It does not have batteries, and was even more of a hit then I thought it would be.  In fact Brothers Sister and a friend will be getting one for Christmas.

I think the brightness of the LED light also was part of it.  Before I gave it to Papa, hers son was suppose to be sleeping.  I see the light flashing under the door.  I open and he says Robotika technika sorry if I butchered it.

He figured out what it was all by himself, for all I know he knows what kinetic energy is too.

The next day he was telling Papa about it on the phone, and I laughed.  7yo are not known for keeping secrets.  They both were just fascinated by it.

yes, they have many types of honey in Ukraine; but Nata says it is "white"---they have no orange blossom honey
Her sister has a sweet tooth; so ANY candy is devoured---even though some of the same brands are available; everyone says the taste is different

Honey is like wine, it takes on characteristics of environment.  It will taste different if the flowers are different in the area the hive was in.  The orange blossom, is a great example.  Clover, another. You can actually got to stores that sell just Honey from different flowers in France.

What is better is often the comfort factor of reminding you of home.  The orange blossom is on great example.  I wonder what Hibiscus Honey tastes like?

Much like wine, it is the consumer that matters and should be appreciated for complexity IMO.
