Any Tax Professionals Here?

As is prone to happen, my wife has volunteered me to help a friend of ours with their US federal income tax return.  Having survived several years of dealing with the USCIS, working professionally as a residential mortgage loan processor, and preparing several complex tax returns of my own, I'm pretty well prepared for the task.  But I could use the ear, and advice, of a professional who can empathise and understand the situation.

Our friend is a young FSU woman, who married last year and received her permanent residency here in the US.  Her husband, a cancer surviver, relapsed and died this past November.  There is no estate to deal with, just income (salary, SSI, pension) to report.

I've generated a joint return, as well as separate returns, for both of them, to see which benefits her the best.  But along the way, I came across a couple of things that I haven't yet resolved, that I would appreciate bouncing off someone with more experience than myself.

Anyone with some professional tax experience, who is feeling benevolent enough to help us out, please drop me a PM.  I respect everyone's privacy not to explain more in an open forum.

I may be able to help.  I used to do tax returns for Detroit redwings.  Some of them were from Russia.  I also know a lot of people.  Can not promise you I can answer your questions but maybe able to help.  My father is very good with taxes as well and does many tax returns for women with deceased husbands.  Were both CPA's.
