« on: July 11, 2009, 02:01:43 PM »
Sometimes my russian lady friend says my name with a phrase at the end that she says is a term of endearment it sounds as if she says ichka at the end of my name. has anyone heard of  term like this im sorry I might not be pronouncing it right but thats what it sounds like . I just wonder what alot of what she says means because I have very little knowledge of the language  .

Yes, it's a feature of Slavic languages, adding 'endearment' modifiers to given names - a manifestation of intimacy/affection usually ;).

Also, they have 'friendly' shorter variants for most given names, e.g. Sasha for Aleksandr, Kolya for Nikolay, Sveta/Lana for Svetlana, etc. - similarly to Beth/Betty/Lisa for Elisabeth in English.

See http://www.meighan.net/alexander/Chapter13.htm for a list applicable to Russian female names - you can pick a few to use with your friend - and reciprocate :D.
